On Writing A First Line That Hooks!
Your first page is the gateway into your story. Your first line has the potential to be the showcase for that first page, for your book, and for YOU as the author. Why not strive to make your first line great?

A great first line:
Is compelling
Leads us to read the next line
Showcases your author voice
Prompts a story question

Let’s take a look at a few first lines and what they do well. [continue to the article for examples of first lines that work well]

I've been going to Dr. Haque's office for about ten years. Over the years, the office has been upgraded to a classy, modern space, and customer focus has continually been improved. The staff will educate you on your teeth beyond what many dental appointments provide. Beyond heated neck pillows and patient specific music profiles (really!), Dr. Haque also uses advanced technologies like oral cancer screenings and numbing shots shown to have less sting on implementation. The staff knows that dental procedures are nobody's idea of a great time, so they do their best to make each aspect more tolerable. Additionally, the office is run well, and changing appointments has never been a problem. I recently had a claims dispute with my company's flexible spending account provider, leading to multiple calls and trips to their website to figure out where my money went. One call to Oakbrook Smiles and they solved the mystery. I should have called them first!
