A little known fact about being a  #travelagent  ?  There's still tons of interest.  I see roughly 40,000 visitors a month to my site, which works with people interested in entering the travel industry.

Who are these people?  The majority of them (70%) are under the age of 45.  Nearly 50% are Millennials. #millennialsInTravel

What does this tell me?  Travel advisors aren't a dying breed.  They not only exist, but there's a strong interest in becoming a travel agent as a career path.

While I don't have numbers on how many convert, I think a strong case can be built for people being interested in becoming a travel professional.

Thoughts?
A study found that only 15% of brick-and-mortar agents are under age 45. But the owner of a website that targets those looking to join host agencies says 50% of visitors to her site are millennials.

Hey there travel pros!  Thought you'd like the comments to this article from a blog whose readers are heavily young, tech-savvy and female (parent company is Gawker and FlyGirl is the travel division of their Jezebel blog).  When people say young people don't use travel agents, they haven't read these comments!   http://goo.gl/c9P5im

Yup, nothing beats customized with support and attention to ease the stress of vacation planning!  Lots of great studies coming out showing Millenials are actually using agents much more than people would think.

I barely made the cut, but luckily, I'm still considered a young enough entrepreneur to featured in Minnesota Business' Young Entrepreneurs list! http://goo.gl/bGIsGi

The +Host Agency Reviews webinar on Protecting Your Travel Agency from CC Fraud is this Wednesday!  Join 100+ agents already registered and reserve your spot today!  http://goo.gl/TGatZN

PS - Travel agency fraud is not the fraud of 5 years ago that consisted of phishing emails that sounded like they were written by a 2nd grader. It's more difficult to spot.  They're becoming more sophisticated in their schemes so make sure you tune in to keep yourself up-to-date!

Hi Stephanie,
Do you know if travel agents are entitled to receiving commissions from a Resort for booking their own destination wedding at the Resort for items such as room rates, event venue costs, food and beverage costs?

Well it's been 8 long, hard months, everybody and I'm thrilled to say that after 3 ER visits. 2 ambulance rides, and... oh I'd say ONE MILLION doctor visits... I finally got me a diagnosis!!! I have every hope I'll be getting back into things soon.  :)

So, I officially have Undifferentiated Connective Tissue Disease (UCTD). What's that? Good question. I'm still not sure there is concise explanation. The easiest way I can think to explain it is that not a lot is known about Connective Tissue Diseases (the ones you've probably heard of are Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis). They vary in severity from person to person and the symptoms can also vary quite a bit between individuals, with many of the Connective Tissue Diseases symptoms overlapping. UCTD is chronic, so it's not really leaving anytime soon, but there is a treatment to hopefully help get the inflammation under control.

My cute lil' disaese.... well, its not technically Lupus but I lean in that direction and am on the same treatment. My diagnosis, UCTD is essentially a box they put people in that don't fit the diagnostic criteria perfectly for a specific Connective Tissue Disease... .cuz we like to be different.  :)

I just started treatment and it can take 6 months to take full effect but I am totally optimistic I will be back in 4 months... because I always like to do what people say can't be done!

My journey has been kinda loopy. There are days I needed a wheelchair (which hopefully won't happen again now that I'm on treatment), days I couldn't leave bed, and every once in awhile I was given the gift of being able to have a little energy to go out!

It can hurt horribly one day, I can feel half-dead another day. For a girl with unending amounts of enthusiasm and energy before this, the changes have been hard to wrap my head around. I can't help but think, "Why can't I get up the stairs?!?! Was eating always this exhausting?" That said, it just makes me even more grateful for all my good moments and times when I have energy!

Thank you all so much for your kind words, patience, and support through all this. I can't tell you how much they meant to me during this journey. I'm just a lucky woman to have so many kind people checking in, being patient, and sending support!

I hope to be back soon(ish). I just wanted to put up a note to update everyone while I was having a good day!  :)

Huggles!
Steph

PS - We tried to document the journey; here's a few fun pics from the past 8 months.

Cruise Planners expects a minimum of $75,000 in annual commissionable sales.  Is this an obtainable figure for someone new to the industry?

Introduction
I run a quaint little B2B website for travel agents called Host Agency Reviews.  It's like the Yelp for a home based travel agent looking for a host agency.

I try to live life to it's fullest.  I am insatiably curious.  I love to travel, love my pup, and find the power of the web and online social connections fascinating.

I write, I read, I daydream.  I do it not only because I enjoy it, but because it keeps my creative spirit vibrant and sparkling!

In the summer you'll find me playing tennis or walking around with my sidekick.  When the cold sets in, I jump for joy and grab my snowshoes and skis, my snow-loving dog in tow.

Most of my posts are on travel, happenings in the travel agent world, science (especially space), technology, nature, marketing, pups, social media, and of course the day-to-day happenings of my dog, Rigel.  The rest of the posts?  Your guess is as good as mine.

Oh, yes.  Let's get the elephant out of the room.  No, travel agents aren't dead.  They're still alive, kicking, and are quite relevant to today's travelers' needs... you should consider using one!

Bragging rights
Did you meet Rigel when he was a pup? I survived.
