Yesterday, Mr. +Ian Fitzpatrick and I celebrated 2 years since we left our jobs and made the leap -- deciding to start our own companies.

It goes without saying that a cake, banner, matching t-shirts and buttons, and a party to celebrate with our +CoCo friends was a necessity on this very special day.  :)   #smallbusiness   #entrepreneurship

It's always interesting to see the most popular articles!  A mix of marketing, legal, and educational articles made the cut this year.   http://goo.gl/RjoAgB

The Beginners Guide to Estimated Taxes:  http://goo.gl/w2qGmd

They're not as scary as they seem, I swear.

Amazingly enough, I had my taxes filed by mid-February this year!  [Applause!]  As we were going through things, my tax advisor and I were chatting about estimated taxes and I realized that would be a great article for those that are just starting their businesses!

I know I found estimated taxes confusing and scary when I first started and I wish I had found an in-depth read that would explain things, laying everything out for me.

Here's what I was confused about (and coincidentally, what I wrote about):
 - What the heck are estimated taxes?
 - What taxes am I really paying?
 - How do I pay them?
 - When are estimated taxes due?
 - What the penalty is if I underpaid my estimated taxes.

Feel free to share your experiences as well!  I'm not an expert in the tax realm but do think there is secrecy veil over estimated taxes that doesn't need to be there!

I know I get this question a lot from friends (and new agents) so I wrote up an article on things a travel agent can offer travelers that they can't get with an online agency:  http://goo.gl/mMDR1i

Hopefully, you can use it as a reference if you have any friends/clients wanting to be more educated on some of the more tangible perks of using a traditional travel agent!  :)

As always, thoughts and suggestions are welcome!

Thanks Stephanie.  I always remind prospects about #1 - those of us in the Midwest are a thrifty bunch!

One of my favorite things about Minnesota winters is the Loppet Festival, a weekend of celebrating the cold and snow across Minneapolis.  The most popular event?  The Luminary Loppet.  Thousands of luminary ice candles and sculptures light the way for walkers, skiers, and snowshoers around Lake of the Isles.  Magical.  :)

Here's a shot of one of the ice sculptures at sunset, just before they were lit.

When you have a client based outside the US, are things different when you book? Do you run into problems if you input a CC from outside the US?

I know vendors don't necessarily want non-US based clients to be getting US rates, especially if the client is doing it because the exchange rate makes for a cheaper product if it's booked in the US.

But, what if you have clients the live outside the US - how do you help them?  I'm not super familiar with this situation and am looking for some insight/advice from those of you that have encountered this situation.

Thanks in advance!

But with Disney, are you booking US packages, or UK packages?  And does anyone have any problems booking Sandals or Beaches for Foreign clients?  So glad you asked this question Stephanie, its one I've been pondering for a while!

An in-depth look at what Errors & Omissions insurance covers for travel agencies: http://goo.gl/hfDuPL.
Some might believe it covers all their errors (as the name would imply), but most policies don't cover things like debit memos, fraud, travel insurance mistakes.  Every policy differs but I think it's well worth the read to make sure you're understanding exactly what you're getting.

And while it may not cover all the mistakes, the one big thing it does cover is your legal defense.  More:  http://goo.gl/hfDuPL

Connector of travel agents and host agencies. Lover of travel, writing, and the stars.
Introduction
I run a quaint little B2B website for travel agents called Host Agency Reviews.  It's like the Yelp for a home based travel agent looking for a host agency.

I try to live life to it's fullest.  I am insatiably curious.  I love to travel, love my pup, and find the power of the web and online social connections fascinating.

I write, I read, I daydream.  I do it not only because I enjoy it, but because it keeps my creative spirit vibrant and sparkling!

In the summer you'll find me playing tennis or walking around with my sidekick.  When the cold sets in, I jump for joy and grab my snowshoes and skis, my snow-loving dog in tow.

Most of my posts are on travel, happenings in the travel agent world, science (especially space), technology, nature, marketing, pups, social media, and of course the day-to-day happenings of my dog, Rigel.  The rest of the posts?  Your guess is as good as mine.

Oh, yes.  Let's get the elephant out of the room.  No, travel agents aren't dead.  They're still alive, kicking, and are quite relevant to today's travelers' needs... you should consider using one!

Bragging rights
Did you meet Rigel when he was a pup? I survived.
