For this #spidersunday by +Kimberly Hosey, +Kjetil Greger Pedersen and +Chris Mallory, something different.
Alas, no connection to mother's day, but it should suit #shadowsonsunday I guess.

I dropped off a little while from Google+, but what better way to return than #Spidersunday, by +Kjetil Greger Pedersen, +Kimberly Hosey and +Chris Mallory. Last weekend I saw this guy, but it was sitting quite high up the hedge, so I did not get a really clear shot. Nevertheless when looking through the photos I still liked this one for its dreamy, water coloury look.

A wolfspider sitting in a nostril (of a dragon sculpture).
I cannot really explain why, but for some weird reason I think it has a "friendly" look on its face.

Thanks, guys! +Kimberly Hosey, sorry if the headline was a bit misleading, but using e.g. my nostril would have been uncomfortable for all involved I'd say :-)

As I just read, this #BuggyFriday , it's all about butterflies... So here is one I find interesting mainly because of the somewhat "muted" colours.
Alas we don't get that big butterflies around here, so this was not shot in the wild.
(a thank you to the curators +Ray Bilcliff, +Margaret Tompkins and +Sherry McBriar for organizing BuggyFriday)

Our window frame provided a nice neutral backdrop for this one.

Nicely done, these long-jawed orbweavers are some of my favorites.

Crane Fly
Even though completely harmless, crane flies still look somewhat scary to me... and getting closer doesn't exactly help.

A Nursery Web Spider carrying around her egg sac.
The common english name for these really makes sense as they weave a net around their offspring just before hatching. In contrast, the most common german name "Listspinne" (a rough literal translation would be "Cunning spider") is a bit more far-fetched. I heard that the name might be inspired by the mating behaviour where the male tries to bribe his future bride with a gift. And sometimes he even manages to re-grab the gift again after the act. Allegedly some males even "play dead" with the gift in their fangs to lure the female and go for surprise (http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg19726454.800)... cunning indeed.

I'd heard the story about the gift before; isn't it fascinating? I like the common English name too; very fitting. Excellent shot here!

I did not get a really close picture of this beautiful wasp, but I wanted to share for #BuggyFriday (by +Ray Bilcliff , +Margaret Tompkins and +Sherry McBriar ) anyway just because the colours were so gorgeous.

For this #BuggyFriday (curated by +Ray Bilcliff ,+Margaret Tompkins and +Sherry McBriar) another grasshopper. This one surprised me with its unusual (at least for our garden) colouring.

For this #buggyfriday , curated by +Ray Bilcliff and +Sherry McBriar, just a common greenbottle fly.
When looking for the english name, I stumbled upon the fact, that this fly's life-cycle is actually used in forensics to determine the age and condition of corpses. Interesting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_green_bottle_fly

Thanks +Christian Werner. Actually my technique consists mainly of:
1. slowly moving closer, using a tripod where possible
2. taking picture on the way already (so I get at least something even if the bug decides to leave early)
3. not showing the myriad of failed pictures on G+ :-)

...and currently I can still harvest a backlog of photos from the last years. But that G+ thing made me very eager to try my luck again when spring comes around.

About CC: I have thought about it, but I think I did not really finish that thought, not sure why. But thanks for the reminder!

Thank god, it's friday, #BuggyFriday (curated by +Ray Bilcliff)
This pretty fellow (probably some Tiger Beetle) visited us on our terrace while I was reading. It waited obligingly until I got my camera (probably studying the paper), but left immediately after I got the first good shot.
