Feynman Physics

The famous Feynman lecture series is provided free online in a modern format aimed at clarity and quality using HTML 5, with LaTeX equations rendered by MathJax JavaScript, and scalable vector graphic for the diagrams, so that they can stretch or shrink to fit your device.

Caltech and The Feynman Lectures Website are pleased to present this online edition of The Feynman Lectures on Physics. Now, anyone with internet access and a web browser can enjoy reading a high-quality up-to-date copy of Feynman's legendary lectures. This edition has been designed for ease of reading on devices of any size or shape; text, figures and equations can all be zoomed without degradation.

Play Services 5.0 Is A Monolith Abomination

"+Google Guava is a monolithic library, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Nobody thinks twice when bundling it for the JVM. In the world of Android the mention of Guava has a bit of a negative stigma due to the dex file format’s method limit and a concern about bloating APK size. The latter is no longer a valid argument. The dex method limit is a hard 64k limit to which Guava contributes just over 14k methods. 20% of this hard limit vanishes when you include Guava.

Sounds scary, right? It isn’t.

Google Play Services 5.0 which just launched contributes over twenty thousand methods to your app. 20k+. One third of the limit! Now that is scary."

After struggling with trying to figure out how various pieces fit together, I've done some research and put together the complete Android Activity/Fragment lifecycle chart. This has two parallel lifecycles (activities and fragments) which are organized vertically by time. Lifecycle stages will occur in the vertical order in which they're displayed, across activities and fragments. In this way, you can see how your fragments interact with your activities.

In addition to the attached image, I've also got an SVG: http://staticfree.info/~steve/complete_android_fragment_lifecycle.svg which is suitable for printing.

If this is missing lifecycle steps or is inaccurate in any way, let me know so I can update it!

Update: I've put the diagram on Github so people can submit corrections via pull requests: https://github.com/xxv/android-lifecycle Cheers!

Welcome to the Internet Age

I think this brings phones to the Internet Age. While the wired Internet has felt like a global network for a very long time, the phone networks have lagged.

+T-Mobile just changed the game, cutting the price of high-speed roaming data by 99+%, and adding unlimited 128kbps roaming data. They also took care of making international voice and messaging cheaper (free in many cases, 20 cents a minute otherwise).

And obviously, this being T-Mobile, all of that is available without a 2-year contract and without making me pay for a subsidized phone.

Everyone else, your move.

Not too bad... 3days, 6hours and 48mins since charged and the battery is still at 13% (plus, I never turn the device or the cell radio off).

Next task, find out how to make google services consume less than it currently does!
