Blue Ventures' award winning work demonstrates again how local community ownership of conservation projects is essential to success. Support the community: Support the reef. See the comments for how you can contribute to successful conservation of Raja Ampat's unique riches.

Volunteer tourism in Raja Ampat: "So what can organisations do to avoid projects that “serve the egos of the tourists more effectively than they serve the locals”? How can we facilitate volunteer tourism that really does benefit those it is meant to serve?" Interesting research results here > http://bit.ly/volun-tours

Great Ralph Reutimann photo of Kris in NYC for the 2017 UNDP Equator Prize award. Bit of a shame though about the choice of prop, given the problems Raja Ampat and the world face with plastic pollution. See the full Real Leaders article > http://bit.ly/SRAheroes

The linked article is specifically about low-tech coral farming and reef rehabilitation practices, but the quote is true of everything to do with MPAs: "Building local support and stewardship of social-ecological systems is a critical process for achieving success in any community-based marine protected area (MPA) participatory management or co-management effort." > http://bit.ly/2JwCtT9

We welcome Arborek's Kalabia Homestay to the website. We welcome too, their far more reasonable transport prices from Waisai! Hopefully it heralds a rethinking of all transport prices ;)

Arborek's a great place to get groups together to share costs. Small enough to easily check all the other homestays, and close to Manta Point, Manta Sandy, Gam Bay and Piaynemo.

Won today: Freedom for this baby Hawksbill Turtle.
Guests, unable to secure the animal's release, reported this ill-considered "tourist attraction" to the Raja Ampat Homestay Association, who immediately took action. http://bit.ly/2pTGgSt

Your feedback on the website is important, and makes a huge difference to homestay families. Especially new members and those without reviews yet. Thanks Christoph :)

Research has proven that actively policed Marine Protected Areas "can increase the resilience of coral reef communities to natural disturbances, including coral bleaching, coral diseases, Crown of Thorns outbreaks and storms."
Raja Ampat's huge, government declared MPAs currently lack effective oversight.
The LPAs declared by local communities and homestays under their own traditional sasi rules are actively policed by villagers and homestay owners, and protect Raja Ampat's highly trafficked inshore reefs.
Please consider donating to expand the areas protected by this very effective effort > https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/protecting-the-world-s-richest-coral-reefs#/

HEADSUP: Always talk to Information Center (IC) staff about anything to do with homestays, NOT the staff at the adjacent BLUD desk that sells the Entry Permits. Despite what may be claimed by others, only IC staff can help you with homestays - and (unless you want to) there is NEVER any need to go into Waisai itself.

Currently, there are only 2 IC staff: Peter and Riski wear branded blue shirts as shown in the photos and video on the page linked below. Identification cards will soon be worn to further help you identify genuine Homestay Association staff. We'll let you know when those have been issued.
