Meet Otto, Melki and Daniel. Three of the many local Homestay Association members who are doing their best to protect their environment from the threats presented by tourism and Crown of Thorns starfish.

Isn't it great to know that when you stay at homestays, every dollar of your holiday spend goes to support local communities who are determined that Raja Ampat will STAY Raja Ampat?

Learn more about the UNDP Equator Prize winning PERJAMPAT (The Association of Indigenous Community Entrepreneurship and Livelihood in Raja Ampat) at http://bit.ly/SRA-HSA or see and book a stay at member homestays at http://bit.ly/SRAplaces

Great to see Mama Engge and Chris representing the Homestay Association at the recent UNDP Our Oceans Conference in Bali. BTW: Stay Raja Ampat wasn't the Equator Prize winner mentioned in this post. That honour went to the Homestay Association. Go team!

“That volunteer trip you might be going on this year isn’t helping anyone…” Almost always true, unfortunately. Here are a few much more effective ways to support conservation & community development in Raja Ampat

OCT 2018 KABUI PASSAGE HEADSUP (In the very unlikely event that any of you are travelling with a guide who is unaware of this and you are considering diving or snorkelling in Kabui Passage.) > A rather aggressive saltwater crocodile has taken up residence in the passage. They are dangerous ambush predators, and it would very unwise to swim in (or anywhere near) the passage until the animal has been removed.

This is a LONG post, but couple of recent discussions in our forum group have raised an issue that potential homestay guests need to be aware of. (Links included below.)

There are many scamming and unscrupulous operators selling packaged Raja Ampat trips. Many of those do not have any relationship at all with the homestays they deliver you to and consequently, price disputes in that situation are not uncommon. If you are being quoted an accommodation price different to that shown by the homestay owner on the homestay’s Stay Raja Ampat page, then beware!

The safest and most reliable way to arrange Raja Ampat travel that incorporates homestay accommodation is to do it yourself, using the information provided on our website and booking your accommodation directly with the owners of the places you will be staying at.

Homestay owners can take you anywhere you want to go, including transferring you to or picking you up from other homestays. They can also supply guides if needed. Many advertise prices for trips to the most popular destinations and transfers to other islands on their Stay Raja Ampat pages. If you book on a few different islands, you’ll see quite a lot just on the transfers.

Our website booking system provides a completely free and easy way to arrange bookings directly with people who in many cases do not speak English.

Booking via the website guarantees that you will never need to pay more than the prices shown on the page you book from, and, at all but a few homestays, you won’t be required to pay a cent before you arrive.

Booking via the website also guarantees that the Homestay Association is available to help you in the event of any problems. You’re on your own otherwise!

You'll find everything you need to know about independent travel in Raja Ampat by following the links on this page > https://www.stayrajaampat.com/ultimate-raja-ampat-guide/information/raja-ampat-step-by-step-guide/

Here is how our booking system works and how it cuts out the middleman to put you in direct contact with your hosts > https://www.stayrajaampat.com/ultimate-raja-ampat-guide/information/how-to-book-raja-ampat-accommodation/

Raja Ampat is not a cheap destination. Don’t expect SE Asian prices! Although it’s part of Indonesia, Raja Ampat’s remoteness, prices, logistics and demographics have far more in common with its Melanesian neighbours like Papua New Guinea than they do with the rest of Indonesia. Everyone wants to save money, but often you don’t get what you expected with cheap (and excessively bargained down) prices. Sometimes you get nothing at all...

Juliana's experience with a cheap tour provider is a classic example (you need to expand our first comment in the thread to see the full story): https://www.facebook.com/groups/StayRajaAmpat/permalink/244517639517844/

Finally, if you do employ the services of a trip organiser who will be staying with you at homestays, make sure that all the payments required (and who you have to pay them to) are clear from the outset.

Be sure to confirm what you are told with the homestay owner when you arrive there.

Marie-Luce’s experience shows how complicated and unpleasant such arrangements can sometimes get > https://www.facebook.com/groups/StayRajaAmpat/permalink/244524259517182/

It’s not hard to organise your own trip, and you will vastly reduce the complication potential if you do.

More great news from Batanta: After it was sadly destroyed by fire in July 2017, Sam Soor has completed rebuilding his highly regarded Yenaduak Homestay. Congratulations Sam and welcome back! :)
