Donna Sherifi from London Connect Theatre: "There was a fourteen year old boy who witnessed his entire family being murdered. His older brother was a drug dealer who didn’t pay off debts and this was the result.

It was difficult working with this participant at first - he was consistently late despite saying he wanted to be an actor. We struggled to get him to commit and he seemed to want to be an outsider. Once we heard his story it all fell into place. He felt alone in the world and was scared to attach himself to something in case it got taken away. We gave him a lot of direction and showed that we care about him and his progress, in the end he did an amazing job, it was very touching to see that formation."

"What do see as your biggest unique selling point comparing to your competitors?"

"Our biggest unique selling point is the price and quality of our e-boards. Our aim was to produce a top quality eboard to come in at about 50 to 75% of the price of the top end very expensive boards. Other companies retail boards in the US and Australia for £1000+. Our boards start at £499 and up to £699. Staying ahead of the game is very important and we have some really exciting designs and innovations coming out this year."

"What advice would you share to someone considering starting their own business?"

"You must feel totally convinced and totally pumped that it’s going to work. If you think it’s going to fail for one minute, it’s going to lose, because that’s one minute you haven’t spent thinking it will succeed."

"I struggled financially at first – even rationing a packet of rice! But this was still the happiest time of my life as I was finally doing what I loved! I then decided to move to London, and was fortunate enough to find a dance partner immediately who gave me amazing training."

"We used to practise 6 hours every day just spinning, I literally used to be sick after! I would call my mum and say how tired I was but also how happy!"

"Where did your idea for Goodlife Coffee originate from?"

"We felt that in Switzerland, the quality of coffee here just isn’t the same as we know it from back home. And there is a strong unmet need for students, entrepreneurs, tourists and business professionals for quality barista style coffee in a comfortable 'out of home' environment here"

"Whilst on a train from Goa, my girlfriend had fallen asleep and I had got engrossed in a conversation with the Indian guy opposite me. I had told him that we had stayed on Morjim Beach near Goa and then later got onto the story about my olives. The sheer excitement in the mans’ eyes when he saw the tattoo of a turtle that I have on my right ankle – “Mister – did you know that Morjim Beach is the nesting ground of the Olive Ridley Turtles? It is fated!”

"Was there ever a special moment in your life where you felt that you were destined to start your own business?"

"When the Berlin wall came down and I drove the next morning into west Berlin. I was standing on the big shopping street KuDamm in stone-washed jeans, a shirt and moccasins, realising that I could be here any day and that this wasn’t a dream! For me that was the initial moment in which I knew I could do anything that I wanted."

"Did you do anything crazy after that special moment?"

"Sort of. I went to a Chinese restaurant for food!"

"The toughest challenge of running your own startup is finding a good work/life balance. Family for me trumps everything and last year I became a father (with another on the way) so I want to be at home as often as I can, but that’s not always possible. It’s hard to be in two places at once, mentally and physically, no matter how much you want it.

I do my best to be present in whatever I am doing and try not to neglect family or work. Prioritisation and thoughtfulness is the key."
