Using PR for SEO: 5 Essential Tips

  #socialmediamarketing   #marketing   #publicrelations   #seo   #seotips   #contentmarketing

To quote Matt Cutts, Google’s Head of Spam, “The objective is not to make your links appear natural; the objective is that your links are natural”.

So just how do you go about SEO in 2016? Well in short, you don’t! You need good PR…and the SEO will take care of itself. Stop building Links, and start earning them.

1.       Engage your audience. Stop creating content for a Google robot and start creating it for your customers and users. An article that was clearly written just for the sake of new content as a platform to insert your Keywords will be blatantly noticeable, both by Google and your audience, and will be quickly condemned to the depths of whichever site or blog allowed you to post such rubbish. Instead, research and research again, brainstorm, create something so unique about your product or service that not only will someone read it from start to finish, but they’ll share it and recommend it to their friends, and maybe even publish your content on their own Site citing you as the creator and source. Not only driving direct traffic to your site, but creating positive Social signals, increasing brand awareness and earning you a link or two in the process.

2.       Get creative. Don’t just flood the same platforms and channels with similar content over and over. There’s more to life than text, press releases and bylined articles. Try putting your ideas and information down on Video, or create an eBook or professionally designed Infographic. People love sharing and looking at a graphic or video that condenses essential information in an easy to digest visual format. Once you’ve invested the time to research and create this content, don’t just post it to Youtube or Facebook keeping your fingers crossed it goes viral, it won’t. Try using Google +, LinkedIn, Visual.ly, SlideShare or Foursquare. Don’t do what everyone else does, do what everyone else doesn’t. Think outside the box.

3.       Start networking. Public Relations agencies have been reaching out, building long lasting relationships with influencers, industry leaders and journalists since time immemorial. If your greatest strength is in the service or product you provide, or your ability to write about it in a way no-one else does then find the people who matter most in your industry and reach out to them. Don’t just send them the URL of the page and ask for a do-follow link! In fact, don’t even mention the L word. Approach them like an intelligent, likeable human being that is passionate about the same industry as them, maybe mention an article of theirs that you really liked and suggest that whatever you are doing might be of interest to them and their readers. More often than not you’ll get a mention, share, like or tweet.

4.       Run a Competition. Everyone loves a Contest, especially if there’s a prize. PR Agencies have helped their clients run Giveaway’s and Competitions for years, it’s simply great publicity. But how many have ever thought to use it for SEO? Depending on your niche, industry and type of competition, reach out to Companies who would want to be a part the publicity, maybe even be the “Sponsored by Company name here”. More than likely, that company will include you on their news page before, during and after the competition. Once you’ve got a big name sponsor, or even a medium sized local sponsor, reach out to the press and journalists. Whether it’s global, national or local, I guarantee a newspaper or magazine somewhere will want to talk about it, giving you not only brand awareness through print media, but an article and backlink on their website. Now it’s down to creating a Video, Image or Banner, or all three to promote across the vast range of social media channels, and remember…EVERY one loves a competition. Contests, Challenges and Freebie giveaways spread like wildfire through Social Media if done correctly. This not only creates huge amounts of positive social signals to your site that is picked up by search engines, but it drives traffic to the landing page where they find the Sign up form, ensuring the User stays on your page and engages with it, lowering the bounce rate and increasing the Session duration, two factors that Google and other search engines take into account for rankings.

5.       Exploit your strengths. In almost any business, there will be someone on the team (usually management) who knows the industry inside out. Only through years of experience, can one gain knowledge and wisdom and become an authority. If there is such a person on your team, maybe even you yourself; use this to your benefit and leverage that knowledge to gain exposure and publicity. Reach out to a local radio or TV station or publication; ask if they would be interested in an interview with your Company expert, maybe a Q&A session offering advice to their listeners, viewers or readers, for free of course! By giving up their time to help others, they increase brand awareness, build the company reputation and gain a link from the Radio or TV stations webpage or publication’s website.

Employ any one of the Tips above and do it well, and you will see the benefit. Employ all five in a well-timed, well executed marketing strategy and do it consistently and creatively, you will be a force to be reckoned with whatever your industry.
