IN MEMORY OF DINO 1/9/2015
Dino, as most members of the two factions called him, was one of the most controversial players in Brno.
He started his Ingress career as the Enlightened agent @walkthedinosaur in the early beta version. At that time he was the most active player in the city, both respected and often hated, which was down to his rather closed-off personality. When banned for the use of unofficial broot client, he started a new account under the nickname @bombardiiino. Although he would not have cared for AP or levels under normal circumstances, this time he wanted to make a fully-fledged contribution to his team, and with the help of his friends did everything possible to reach level 8 in as little as three days, thus breaking the local record.
Reaching about level 10, he decided to ditch it all and started a new – blue – account under a nickname that, with the help of small and capital letters, seemed vulgar although it was not. His reasons behind the choice were both to troll the Resistance and an effort to gain confidential information from their community and help reverse what was then the dominance of the Resistance in Brno. As he only deleted his original green account some time later, he was shunned by both factions. The Resistance never fully accepted him, suspecting his intentions. Several times disputes resulted in personal threats. Once he realized he had no chance of being respected by the Res or of being admitted into their “secret” communities, Dino wiped his blue account.
At his request (justified directly to Niantic by him being fed up with coming up with new nicknames), he was finally allowed to use his initial nickname - walkthedinosaur. Before his request was endorsed, he played for some ten days as @Czeguevara and again managed to reach level 8 in that short space of time. Once the first account was clear he played under it until the end.
He was not a social type and aside from regular sessions in the circle of his closest friends in his favourite Pivnice u Poutníka pub, and participation at farms, he was not much involved in the community. Yet whenever Dino met a starting player he was happy to give advice and steered them into the local community. This too made him a mentor, an example and often the first player who brought them to community where they got to know loads of new people and pals. Into the community that paid tribute to his memory with this exceptional event.
Report of his death came without the least warning and stunned not just his Enlightened friends but players of both fractions who did not know him personally. It came the evening before his funeral. This is the reason why many players who would also have loved to say their goodbyes could not attend and also the motivation behind deciding to build this art that almost everybody could make in his memory.
To be able to pull it off in such a short space of time we opted for something simple but impressive – a blue-green supernova.
The selection of portals was clear. There are two portals within reach of his favourite city centre pub surrounded by sufficient density of portals around. We started to gather around 6PM, built a blue and green P8 and began key-farming. Some two hours later, when there were enough keys we sent out cleaning cross-faction teams that eliminated the last blocking links and pulled a link across the entire area dividing the ENL and RES sides.
With no reason to delay, the players set out to link at around 9PM, except for a handful of people who followed the whole situation on intel and sent teams to link empty spaces when needed. Everybody linked until they ran out of keys or time.
The last few links were sent before 2AM and we reached the fantastic number of 185 green and 189 blue links.
The whole event took place thanks to massive willing and perfect cooperation on both the Enlightened and Resistance sides. Paradoxically in spite of his controversial career and unhappy end Dino managed to improve the poor relations between the Brno factions. The fact that we all put away our differences and together made this beautiful star for Dino demonstrates that he was a big player.
I would like to give my thanks to all who supported this event in any way with a direct contribution but also by not sabotaging the event in any way and remembering Dino.
