More than just a pretty
You may have seen links that look a bit like this (http://bit.ly/1aJAky3) dotted around in people's posts. Initially they might look alarming and spammy but they're nothing to be afraid of! They are simply links that have been shortened using a shortening service, and there are lots of them (even Google has one!)
► And many more. As you can probably tell I use Bitly :)
DID YOU KNOW?
In most of the above you can actually customise the link (within reason) to something less spammy looking such as http://bit.ly/googleplus50. However, many custom URLs will be taken already so choose wisely!
WHY USE THEM?
► Shorten links when there are limitations on characters (such as Twitter)
► Turn long, scary links into pretty, short ones!
► Many services also apply tracking on shortened links so you can see how many times they have been clicked.
► You can never really tell where you will be taken by clicking the link
► A shortener redirect can sometime mask problem sites. If you have McAfee Site Advisor (or something similar installed) which places green ticks or red crosses next to links depending on how safe the site is - I have noticed that even known problem sites receive a green tick when redirected through a link shortener.
[Disclaimer: I promise to only shorten safe site links!]
So next time you are including multiple links or annoyingly long links in a post, consider using a shortener!
