Dental Ridge Bone Loss After Tooth Loss

For patients who have undergone extractions, especially in those with full mouth extractions followed by denture wear, there is almost always a phenomenon of bone loss over time. Specifically, the bony ridge where the teeth used to be become resorbed and shrink over time due to pressure from dentures, a lack of structural support from teeth absence, as well as from the normal consequences of aging. Ridge loss not only causes dentures to become more difficult to wear over time, but can also produce aesthetic changes in the way the facial tissues can appear.

In general, ridge loss can be avoided by bone grafting in cases where a few teeth are removed, and by dental implants in cases of full mouth extractions where implants are strategically placed in the canine and molar regions. Dental implants can also assist in denture retention and is considered the best method of denture wear at the moment.
