Originally, dogs were bred strictly for their usefulness to man such as, hunting and often capturing prey. Therefore, out of necessity the Hound group was one of the first types of dogs to be bred for specific work.  Read more at https://www.sportingdogpro.com/articles/akc-hound-dog-group #hounddogs   #sportingdogpro

For some reason Turkey hunting season, maybe because it’s the first Spring hunting season around here, is laced with a high level of anticipation, excitement, tradition and bonding. It brings about a spirit of togetherness that starts with teaching each other to call and then later to shoot. My sixteen year old seems to be most excited this year to call a turkey in for his 13 year old brother and they have talked (and yelped and clucked) non-stop about it for weeks now. Just as at home in the water as it is on land, the Chessie, as it is often called, is an astounding waterfowl retriever. Originally called the Chesapeake Bay Ducking Dog because of it’s unusual origination. Apparently, in 1807 an English ship wrecked off the coast of Maryland... Gun training is very different from regular obedience training. It is critical that you teach it early because you can’t work backwards. Gun training isn’t a behavior issue it’s a part of introducing your hunting dog into an artificially engineered area of the hunting environment. When a hunting dog is also a house dog he is considered valuable to the family and his desire to please you is increased. He wants to deliver the best possible outcome in every situation and because he trusts you he will go well beyond the call of duty to get the task, whether it is a hunting task or any other task, done. My French Brittany is my daily companion first and seasonal hunting partner second. Much like my brother was when we both lived at home.

Heartworms are parasites that infect your dogs’ heart and surrounding areas. The parasite comes from an infected mosquito which inturn bites your dog and injects the dog with the heartworm larvae and if your dog is untreated can develop into large 12 inch worms.. The amazing working dogs that make the cut are known as some of the toughest canines in existence. Each team can start the race with around 16 dogs but, must finish the race from Anchorage to Nome with at least 6 dogs. Dogs that can’t make it the whole way are dropped using an elaborate system that has been put into place to transport and care for them by hundreds of volunteers.  Read more at https://www.sportingdogpro.com/articles/the-amazing-dogs-of-the-iditarod-the-last-great-race #iditarod #sportingdogpro #sleddogs

Choosing your AKC dog name is important, it will last a lifetime and will tell the world about you and your dog. When it comes to his field name or the name you use on a regular basis it is best to stick to something short and sweet. The name you give your dog actually speaks more about you, the owner, than it does your dog. Not to be confused with aggression, controlled prey drive creates careful and persistent work effort, especially in searching out birds. A well bred dog with a generous amount of prey drive can usually be taught to be an intently focused hunting companion.  Read more at https://www.sportingdogpro.com/articles/utilizing-prey-drive-for-the-gun-dog #sportingdogpro #dogtraining #preydrive
