The Gloaming - Live at the NCH (2018)

Following in the footsteps of The Chieftains, Planxty, the Bothy Band and more recently Altan or Lúnasa, The Gloaming is one of the rare traditional Irish music bands to enjoy a commercial and critical success both a home and abroad while at the same time making a significant impact on the contemporary musical landscape.
Since their impressive live début in August 2011, the band have enjoyed an incredible run of sell out shows in Dublin’s National Concert Hall and released two albums for RealWorld Records, the self-titled The Gloaming in 2014 and The Gloaming 2 in 2016. Featuring six 7 to 18 minutes-long tracks curated from their live performances of the previous two years in what is effectively the band’s “home” turf, Live at the NCH was released on the same label on 2 March 2018 last.

Nils Frahm - All Melody (2018)

A classically-trained pianist, a multi-instrumentalist, a collector of eclectic vintage acoustic and analogue instruments, a piano designer and a sound engineer at heart, Berlin-based musician Nils Frahm is a trendsetter of sorts, leading the way and pointing many young musicians towards new sonic territories.
Following on from an improvised solo piano album recorded on a custom-made vertical concert grand piano designed by David Klavins, a soundtrack and recent collaborations with Ólafur Arnalds or with his childhood trio Nonkeen, All Melody is Nils Frahm’s highly anticipated seventh LP album, released on 26 January 2018 last on the Erased Tapes label.

Released on 25 May 2018 last, Mirall is Rauelsson’s second album for the Berlin-based label.

Danish String Quartet - Last Leaf (2017)

Born in Denmark and now in their mid-thirties, Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen (violin), Asbjørn Nørgaard (viola) and Fredrik Schøyen Sjölin (cello) originally met at a country summer camp for amateur musicians when they were still in their teens. Performing together since the early 2000s, the musicians have been rehearsing and refining a chamber music repertoire under the tutelage of Tim Frederiksen, the renowned viola teacher and head of Chamber Music at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen. The ensemble were then joined in 2008 by violin player Frederik Øland from Norway and started recording professionally, first as the “Young Danish String Quartet” before dropping the “young” part in 2012.

What really sets the quartet apart from similar ensembles is their recent endeavour to arrange Scandinavian folk music for a classical string quartet. Initiated with the remarkable "Wood Works" in 2014, the Danish String Quartet resume their exploration of the Nordic traditional repertoire with Last Leaf released on ECM Records on 22 September 2017 last.

Clarice Jensen - For This From That Will Be Filled (2018)

A classically-trained cellist, composer and artistic director of the American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME), Clarice Jensen has been building up an impressive portfolio of collaborative projects over the last 15 years. Either as a solo artist, with ACME or as part of New York City’s Wordless Music Series, Clarice Jensen has performed the music of a wide range of contemporary and experimental composers often blurring the lines between classical, electronic, ambient and indie rock music.

Touring and recording extensively with bands or artists such as Stars of the Lid, A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Jóhann Jóhannsson or Max Richter for instance has profoundly shaped and influenced the music of the cellist over the last decade. Based on slow melodic repetition, manipulated cello textures, tape loops and featuring three extended pieces, For This From That Will Be Filled is the musician’s long-awaited solo début and was released on 6 April 2018 last on Miasmah Recordings.

Khruangbin - Con Todo El Mundo (2018)

Hailing from Houston, Texas and comprised of Donald “DJ” Johnson on drums, Laura Lee on bass and Mark Speer on guitar, Khruangbin is one of the most exciting instrumental three piece (with the odd vocals thrown in) to emerge in recent years. The band incorporates recognisable R’n’B, soul, funk, dub and hip-hop patterns with a wealth of other musical influences gathered from foreign rock and pop records.
The band was formed around 2010, but the inclusion of one of their tracks “A Calf Born in Winter” in Bonobo’s Late Night Tales November 2013 mix album got them noticed internationally. The band were subsequently signed to Late Night Tales’ sister label Late Night Stories, releasing their first full length LP The Universe Smiles Upon You in 2015, followed by Con Todo El Mundo on 26 January 2018 last.

Peter Broderick - All Together Again (2017)

Somewhat like the public letter-writers of the past, American artistic polymath Peter Broderick has adopted a similar role lately as a “public” musician, in addition to his creative work as a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and composer. “Ever since I started releasing records in 2007”, notes the musician, “people have contacted me periodically to ask if I’d be interested in making music to accompany their projects”. Released on 17 November 2017 last on the Erased Tapes record label, All Together Again is a collection of songs and instrumentals spanning a decade featuring private commissions for films, shorts, weddings and even a fashion show.
