This is a really clever and well planned idea. Take IVR - something many people dread or at least dislike - and use it as a part of a larger process where the IVR's strengths are amplified and weaknesses are minimized by keeping the human/personal contact element in place.
CRM originally shared:

So this past fall, Avila deployed Scaller, an interactive voice response (IVR) solution from Vocantas, to aid its student retention efforts. Avila provided Vocantas with contact information for each of the 138 first-year students who started at the school in late August and 15 students from other years who were on academic probation. Beginning four weeks into the fall semester, the IVR made dozens of calls each day. The fully automated system polled the students about their needs in seven areas: time management, financial assistance, career counseling, academic advisement, note-taking, personal counseling, and tutorial help.
Vocantas IVR helps Avila University reach out to students in danger of transferring or dropping out.

Just when you thought Siri, the voice-enabled virtual assistant on Apple’s newest iPhone, couldn’t get more pervasive, the application showed up on last night’s episode of “The Big Bang Theory.”

CRM originally shared:

"IVR and the mobile app are very complementary," says Scott Kolman, senior vice president of marketing at SpeechCycle, a firm that early last year launched a new mobile division that focuses exclusively on meeting the growing demand for customer care solutions on smartphones.

"They're both there to provide a service or solve a customer's problems," he says.

But that's where the similarities end, as any company that simply tries to mirror its IVR in a mobile application will soon find out.
Customer interaction technologies should support one another, not compete

We can thank Apple for this. With the Siri voice-powered app that shipped with the newest Apple iPhone 4S model, people showed a willingness to warm up to speech interfaces, and other companies have taken notice.

Siri certainly didn’t usher in the era of speech, but it made it attractive again. Or at least started people talking about it again. Hopefully it’s not a short conversation.

Harlan Hogan is a well-known voice actor and a published author of many books about building and recording from a home studio. A must-read for any home-based talent is his book The Voice Actor’s Guide to Recording at Home ...and On the Road.

Hogan is a pioneer of the idea of the “portability” of recording and has recorded voice-over projects in hotel rooms across the world (and even in an occasional quiet, parked car).

The use of professional talent in the arena of real estate advertising is an on-going and constant requirement. It’s also a great time-saver for realtors, who, like all of us, have limited hours in the day—although most of them do their best to stretch that workday—and have a finite amount of energy.

Of great fascination to me is the elocution training given to operators as part of their rigorous training. Yellins explains: “They were taught to draw out certain words for clarity because early telephone lines were noisy. So the word please would be pronounced “pleeeyaz”. The number nine became “niyun” and the word line turned into “liyun.” What I always thought of to be a regional “tick” (or stereotype) was actually borne out of necessity to overcome the sound issues of early crude telephony lines.
