Full-Ride Scholarships Are Not Always Guaranteed (https://goo.gl/WwF7id)

For college #athletes who receive a full-ride scholarship, it's important to know the kind of "fine print" associated with the award and what you need to do to maintain the validity of the scholarship. Many students are surprised to learn that athletic scholarships are one-year contracts that need to be renewed.

In some cases, there are multi-year contracts available, but they are still rare at this point. If you have specific questions about this process or would like to find out about what college athletic programs would be the best fit for you, the Sparks Consulting team can help here.

Our process provides a comprehensive athletic and academic analysis to determine opportunities. We give all our clients a college "short-list" with realistic possibilities along with an academic and athletic timeline. When it's time to submit your application, we provide essay and application support. If you'd like to get a better idea about our program, check out the link above to visit our website.

You can run our Timeline Wizard no matter what sport you play, meet the Sparks Consulting team, and understand a little more about our process. We've helped thousands to students land in the perfect environment for their long-term success.

NCAA Football Risers and Fallers (https://goo.gl/Jd4ySj)

It's almost impossible not to notice that #college #football is going full blast. Saturday's take on a different meaning around college campuses this time of year, even for non-Division 1 programs. The tailgating festivities, the roar of the crowd at the kickoff and the incredible highs and lows of the season are what we love about college sports.

College football rocks, plain and simple!

With a whole new slate of games on the agenda for tomorrow, we wanted to share an article from NCAA about some of the risers and fallers among the NCAA D1 football rankings.

First, let's give it up for the No. 11 Cougars. Wazzu, led by senior QB Luke Falk, is in the midst of one of the most impressive program turnarounds in recent memory. Washington State went 3-9 in 2014, but it's gained steam ever since. In-state rival Washington, ranked sixth, is most likely to win the Pac-12 with USC's loss. But Wazzu has a real chance to win the conference and make the Playoff.

On the flip side, the Trojans fell nine spots to No. 14. USC is supremely talented, but it's just looked out of sync all year. When the offense plays well, the defense falters, and vice versa. To be fair, USC was underwhelming last September, too, and it made a late Playoff charge. This isn't over yet for the Trojans. But they'll need both of the Washington schools to slip up, and with the way they're playing, that may be unlikely.

What games are you most interested in this weekend? Let us know!

Working With Sparks Consulting, A Parent's Perspective (https://goo.gl/4Hfdgc)

The #college experience, especially before the selection is made, is completely different for students and parents. From the student athlete's perspective, there is probably more excitement than anxiety. Parents generally can't help but feel a little bit of sadness and anxiety watching their student prepare to leave the nest for the first time.

Throw into the mix the decision about where to attend college, and what sports program will be the best fit for their abilities and it's easy to get overwhelmed.

Don't stress (any more than you already are). The Sparks Consulting team has your back and can help the entire family during this special time in a young person's life. We recently featured Tracy E. on the website, a parent of a talented student-athlete.

Here is what Tracy had to say about working with the Sparks team:

"Sparks was an integral part of the college process for our son. Their vast knowledge of the US collegiate world and the dedication of our advisor during this process allowed our son to make informed decisions. His advisor took the time to understand him and made the process a very personalized one. In the end, he made the right choice for himself, and his counselor was instrumental in that process. We highly recommend Sparks for their focus, dedication, and expertise."

Hey, It's Chris Deyoung! (https://goo.gl/Bdiu7U)

If you've ever met someone who is a #natural at a subject matter, whether it's nursing or teaching, or in our case, counseling you'd be describing someone like Chris Deyoung. Chris has spent the better part of his professional career helping guide young people towards the university systems that best suit their needs culturally, academically, and athletically.

Chris' experience is geared towards the American Athletic Conference, and the Big 10 Conference. He holds an undergraduate degree from Rutgers University in Economics and History. Chris completed graduate work at the University of Michigan in Secondary Social Studies Education.

As with all our counseling team, Chris holds an active certification from the NCAA recruiting exam and has completed coursework in the Principals of Educational Counseling from UC Irvine.

Chris cut his teeth in the recruiting world as a program director of a prominent college prep school - charged with helping upperclassmen interact with coaches and what to expect as a recruit. Our website discusses a bit more about Christopher:

He has worked at Sparks since 2013. A high school history teacher by trade, he enjoys helping his students think critically about the college selection process and their futures insofar as the big picture.

Eating Smart In College (https://goo.gl/rF3HTf)

The team here at #Sparks #Consulting help college athletes make difficult decisions every day. These are largely focused on the big picture - where to attend college, and what sports program suits their needs to set them up for long-term success.

And for our part in that process, we do great work for our clients.

No matter what path you take to get to college, one universal theme runs through the "college experience". Questionable nutrition.

We've all made those late night Taco Bell trips, but especially for college athletes, getting proper nutrition can be a challenge. With busy practice and game schedules, as well as keeping academics front-of-mind it can be hard to find time to get a well-rounded meal several times a day.

If you're stuck on a campus meal plan, consider these tips from Nerd Fitness: (https://goo.gl/MP86iB)

#health #eating #college

LIMIT YOURSELF TO ONLY THE GOOD OPTIONS

Even though being on a meal plan means you're forced to eat at a certain place, you're still faced with an abundance of choice when you enter that dining hall. The key to eating healthily on a meal plan is making the right choices and steering clear of the bad ones.

ASK FOR DISMANTLED FOOD

Certain foods you'll find at the dining centers contain healthy components - but they're surrounded by junk that you don't want.

Stop These Recruiting Tactics Immediately (https://goo.gl/rF3HTf)

When you're a talented high school #athlete, you've inevitably thought about how to get noticed by a college program that you want to be a part of.

But are you going about it all wrong?

All too often, attempting to take the process into their own hands ends in disaster. A confessional from a professional college coach highlights the missteps taken by would-be college athletes:

I've done recruiting at every collegiate level. And I mean every. I was an Associate Head Coach at the NAIA level. We had a ton of money to give and it was easier to get kids into school than I could imagine. The NAIA's eligibility rules are not as stringent as the NCAA. I've been a Head Coach at the Division III level with no scholarship money.

That line in your email that says something like "I'm really interested specifically in your school" seems a little fishy when I look up in the To: column of the email and can tell it was sent to another 100 schools with the same line.

You can check out the full confessional here: (https://goo.gl/qkhgM1)

Tips for College Freshmen (https://goo.gl/i7YhhK)

When it comes to helping #college athletes find the right program for them to succeed, the Sparks Consulting team has more than a little to say! Our unique process helps men and women venturing out into college life land in the location that best suits their needs.

This process involves more than just sports - ours is a comprehensive college counseling program that takes into account the environment a student will need to thrive.

We can help get you where you need to be, but sometimes, it's helpful getting advice from someone who was recently in your shoes. The article we linked to above from College Info Geek might provide some helpful tips that you have yet to consider for your first year in the college environment.

If your school offers a position that helps with summer orientation for incoming students, apply for it. This kind of job will build your confidence and communication skills like none other.

Get to know your professors. College is just as much about networking as it is about sitting in class. Plus, most of them are bored out of their skulls during office hours.

One that made us chuckle involved flip-flops in the shower, no exceptions in this department! Click the link above for more practical advice from a former Freshman.
