I am sad to see how far this company has fallen. I placed an order on their website. When I received confirmation (which was immediately), I saw that the item was on backorder. Not good for an item listed prominently for Christmas delivery. I called immediately to cancel the order. Was put on hold for 30 minutes before I could speak with someone. Then was told that I could not cancel the order and I should call back in a day or two. What? Why? Kim (refused to give her last name) told me that she had not received the order yet (???, it's the internet) and did not know when she would receive it. My credit card company had received the billing already though. They were happy put a hold on the payment IMMEDIATELY! This seems to be a way of doing business that some shady companies do to make it as difficult as possible to cancel an order to maximize their profit by making it difficult and frustrating for their customers to get satisfaction. This used to be a very customer oriented company before it was bought out. I would recommend staying away.

First let me say that I used to visit A Southern Season 25 years ago when I lived in Durham and it was still in a tiny storefront, and loved it. This year, though, I ordered presents for three family members online: Swedish ginger cookies for one sister, which arrived in a million pieces. A gift basket for another sister, which arrived with a gift card bearing the wrong names of both senders and recipients (I don't mean misspelled; I mean completely wrong). Haven't heard yet about gift number 3. I asked for and received a refund for the ginger cookies. There's really nothing to be done about the wrong names except laugh--which we all did. I won't be ordering from A Southern Season again, though.

What an epic store! It is like a specialty store on lots of caffeine! I am an avid coffee/tea drinker and was pleasantly surprised by their large and varied selection of bulk coffee and teas. Great selection of cheeses, wines, candy--the list goes on and on. Each time I go here to shop I always find something new and tasty!

Just came back from the "semi-annual" sale 40-70% off. Wow! It was terrible! I remember a few years back they had a great sale and the prices were excellent. There was simply nothing that was even remotely "sale" priced. It's like they jacked up the prices double and then offered 40-70% off that. Won't be going back ever for another of these "sales"
Response from the owner - 10 months ago
Hi Stephen, I'm sorry to hear you did not enjoy this year's sale. We're glad to have you as a long time customer who has enjoyed the tradition of our semi-annual sales. We did change it from previous years in that we no longer put the whole store on sale. We only discount specific items now which is why the prices may have looked differently this year. We hope to see you around the store again. - Southern Season Chapel Hill

One of my favorite places in Chapel Hill! All the staff is knowledgeable, and I always find things I didn't know existed, but now need! Great place to find gifts. The best part, though is the fabulous chocolate bar where I spend entirely too much time and money.

This is a great retailer to get pretty much anything you need or want for your kitchen. The selection is incredible and they've made a lot of enhancements to the store design so it no longer feels so claustrophobic. Wines, candies, teas, coffees, breads and other baked goods, cheeses, including several bars (salad, hot and sandwich) where you can order a quick lunch to go. The Weathervane restaurant is attached and that's a great place to sit & eat, too. This reminds me basically of a miniature Herrods.

My first visit to Southern Season I was smitten. That was 6 years ago. It has since changed a bit. It used to be my go to shop for international and hard to find foodstuffs. Now it is more like a tourist destination. If you love food it is worth a visit but you can't afford to make it a habit.

This place is truly amazing. It has everything. I love going during the holidays. It kind of reminds me of an upscale market.....teas, bakery, chocolate, wine/beer, local products, tons of dining and glassware, kitchen supplies, specialty items, flowers, cards, and so much more. It is such a great place for gifts and kitchen items. I love Southern Season.
