Sorrel River Ranch, Utah — In southern Utah's redrock country, the quiet sandstone buttes and canyons offer superb hiking and scenery like nowhere else on earth. From the air, the interconnected rivers, canyons, and colorful formations, with names like the Needles, the Maze, and Deadhorse Point dazzle the eyes of passing pilots.

In late fall, winter, and early spring, you can have some of the world’s most spectacular scenery almost completely to yourself, and you don't have to rough it! Sorrel River Ranch is an upscale retreat with an ultra-rare address. It's right on the banks of the mighty Colorado River, and backed on both sides by walls of glowing red sandstone.

A perfect retreat for couples or families, the Ranch's location just 17 miles upstream from Moab and close to Canyonlands Airport (CNY) means most pilots land at CNY and rent a car or Jeep. Of course, if you have a helicopter, you can land right on their enormous front lawn, beside the horse paddock and organic garden! (In-season, about 75% of the produce comes from the ranch’s own farm, near the entrance.) The resort also has a full-service spa and pool open in warmer months.

Easy elegance and luxurious details define Sorrel River. The service was exceptional – at the front desk, in the restaurant and especially at the spa. A special thanks to my masseuse Tamra – it was blissful! Imagine a picturesque log cabin, with all the modern amenities, the Colorado River running thru your front yard and out back a sprawling horse corral, all surrounded by towering red canyon walls. I thought Moab was only about mountain biking slickrock and rafting level 4 rapids. This spot is in harmony with the deeply effecting beauty and serenity the landscape offers. Sitting on my cabin porch in the early morning I saw an eagle circling above the Colorado River, then dipping and diving with a playful raven, until finally landing on a tiny sand island for a drink of water before soaring off into the woods. Those few moments made my trip… until dinner! I thought I couldn’t find a well prepared piece of fresh fish in Utah until I ordered the local trout. The next day I had the Alaskan halibut and it was equally fabulous. The waiters were true professionals and just fun to talk with. We took advantage of the free bikes and spacious fitness center. Lots of family activities; horseback riding, the pool with hot tub and smores around the fire pit were especially popular. There were board games in the lounge and lush vintage leather furniture that J.R. would be proud to own. It was spectacular in every way. The only negative thing I can say is this place will spoil you for staying anywhere else in Moab.

A perfect peaceful location not far from Moab, though directions sometimes misleading. the sorrel river gently flowing beside you, and right outside the gates is where they shot a film for a movie. the food was excellent when i was there, especially the steaks with peppercorn sauce. though the packed lunch had to be one of the most expensive lunches ever. you had to pay extra for the gratuity. though on in all it was a pleasant trip, loved the horse riding and the walks nearby, i found to be amazing not to mention the cliff gorge walk and, the sand rock blocks which i free climbed. oh and the beds were very comfortable and we enjoyed the rooms and the pool (at evenings).

Know nothing about the resort, but don't go to the restaurant in mid-march! Prices were high, food was OK, but cold when it got to the table, which was about an hour after it was ordered, and then 18% gratuity was automatically added. Will not go back.

We just had a great team offsite here. Our guides Ed and Tyler brought us on a tour of Arches, and later in the day some of us went on a short hike closer to the ranch. In November the weather was cool and we had the whole place to ourselves.

The hotel is very nice but the resturant is incredibly expensive for comparativly bad food.

It should be a warning when they charge a 18% gratuity no matter the size of your party. They force you to tip for horrible service and food that tasted like it was prepared two weeks ago and then microwaved. A very expensive meal for the service and quality of food. How can you mess up spaghetti that is bad!!!
