“• Assume people are as or more qualified than you. Before you are about to explain a paper condescendingly to someone in a dress, assume that they wrote it.

• Give feedback based on content. Ask yourself, “Would I give this feedback to a masculine-presenting white cis man?”

• Women should feel free to be assertive if that’s their personality and let’s celebrate that instead of criticizing it, but let’s also celebrate people that display leadership by empathy and encouraging.”

Basically, don't be rude.
(this was originally given as a talk at AlterConf in Oakland)

“I envision a design practice that works in the intersection between art, design and computation. A company founded on the belief that the pragmatic and poetic is inseparable, and that modern design products should be dynamic, adaptable systems built in code. This kind of practice would create beautiful, intelligent, and functional design products for any medium, be it physical installations, web applications, or print products. Most of all, it would be a company dedicated to good ideas, with the talent to implement them despite technical requirements.”
The rise of the meta-designer, and the use of algorithmic design systems.

DUDE.
Turkish graphic designer and electrical engineer Tolga Girgin continues to experiment with calligraphy that seems to jump off the page. Girgin uses shading, shadows, and different forms of perspective to create three-dimensional letters that float, stand, drip, and slant. You can see more

“But what I’ve realized is that every question carries weight. Every bit we collect is part of a personal history—a story of a life lived. And those lives are always messier than the “frictionless interactive experiences” we—designers, writers, strategists, whathaveyous—intend to create.”

The listicle worth reading. From the authors of the Cluetrain Manifesto.
Hear, O Internet. It has been sixteen years since our previous communication. In that time the People of the Internet — you and me and all our friends of friends of friends, unto the last Kevin Bacon — have made the Internet an awesome place, filled with wonders and portents.

Hmmmmm.
There is an unfortunate climate of fear in the software community today. It is primarily in ephemeral video interviews and podcasts that we get any semblance of coherent criticism and even then it is reticent. Worse than the fact that this criticism is relegated to verbal discussions is that it is later renounced by the very same designers and developers when they are interviewed in the more permanent-seeming medium of the written word...

“In addition to the familiar condiment bottle, Ekuan also designed the Komachi bullet train in Tokyo, the Narita Express airport liner and Yamaha’s VMAS Motorcycle. Like the Kikkoman vessel — whose design was inspired by Ekuan’s mother who struggled to pour soy sauce out of a big container — Ekuan’s designs are driven by the “principle [of] democratization,” dedicated to making things accessible to the greater public.”
Kenji Ekuan, the industrial designer responsible for the ubiquitous Kikkoman soy sauce dispensers and Komachi bullet train, passed away this February 2015.

“Legacy media accuses young people of being apathetic while actively attempting to remove them from the discussion.

Legacy media isn’t mocking us because we aren’t a legitimate source of information; they’re mocking us because they’re terrified.

Glozell and Bethany and I weren’t put in a chair next to President Obama because we have cultivated an audience. We were put there because we have cultivated legitimacy.”
