Volunteer cheerfully helps patients, visitors as he approaches milestone in hospital halls

Condensed from the original article by Jeannie Nuss, which ran in the COLUMBUS DISPATCH on May 27th, 2014

Inside Ohio Health Riverside Methodist Hospital, the busy intersection affectionately called Broad and High tends to leave patients and visitors looking a little lost.

Their heads ping-pong among color-coded signs as they seek to navigate the medical maze around them. Sometimes, Gus Gastaldo goes to their rescue. The cheery volunteer, a 77-year-old Gahanna resident, mans the bustling junction on most Friday mornings, greeting just about everyone he sees and providing ample directions.
He’s really good at that because he’s so friendly, said Gerry O Shaughnessy, manager of volunteer services at Riverside.  His experience as a patient at the hospital Gastaldo underwent open-heart surgery six years ago inspired his return.
They really treated me so well, he recalled. I said, “Maybe I can do something by giving back.”
He began volunteering about three months after his surgery in 2008, quickly turning into a weekly fixture.  Between greeting and directing people, Gastaldo sometimes helps wheel new moms and their babies out to their cars.
Most of his interactions at the hospital don’t last long, but his acts of kindness add up.  Pins on the blue vest he wears at the hospital track his volunteer hours: 50, 100, 500 ~ and closing in on 1,000.
His wife of 56 years, Roberta, has been trying to catch up since signing up as a hospital volunteer this year.  “My husband loves it so much,” she said. “He wouldn’t miss Fridays for anything.”  Which explains why she decided to join him.
Before retiring, he sold hydraulic equipment and she was employed by a heating-and-air-conditioning company.  Giving back ~ to neighbors or the Knights of Columbus ~ has long been in their nature.
“My dad’s always been a volunteer,” said his son Joseph, a doctor at Riverside.
Besides his Friday stint at Riverside, Gastaldo volunteers every other Wednesday as an American Red Cross courier.  Columbus Lodge 2599 is proud to acknowledge a special member who gives in the true spirit of the Sons of Italy!
