Hype O'Clock

Budgie

• We're moving to GNOME 3.22 this weekend in Solus
• This will help us resolve the 3.22 bugs for Budgie...
• We'll end up doing a new tag of Budgie 10.2.x branch to fix those issues... Please don't expect features in this release though, just bug fix stuff. 10.2.x is effectively moving to EOL when we transition to 11.

MATE

• Brisk Menu will see a new release this week

Boot/Kernel/Stuffs

• Should be in shape to fully adopt clr-boot-manager by the weekend.
• This will mean moving to 4.9.x, LTS, bulletproof updates..
• Initial rough Optimus support will be coming through shortly after :)
• No more mandatory reboots after kernel updates!

Post All That Stuff

• Going full out on Budgie 11!

Bombshell:

We're getting a new icon theme. Saywhaaaaaaat....

Warning

The unstable Solus repository will be living up to its name today, as later on this afternoon (UTC) we'll be updating to GNOME 3.22. If you're on unstable, please hop on over to the Shannon repo until it's complete. We've synced this morning to allow you the time to get onto stable :)

P.S. Also, GNOME 3.22!

No rest for the wicked :)

Right now we got the whole news aspect out of the way with Solus & Flatpak - I've put forward my proposal to Valve.

This is what Solus is doing up or down, basically we're keeping Valve in the loop here out of respect and making them aware of future options, and giving them an opportunity to provide input & feedback.

They might decline, and that's OK. I hope not, but hey, cards on the table. This is where we're heading.

Posted by @ikeydoherty on #4768. @kisak-valve mostly thinking aloud here, but.. It occurs to me that my biggest issue with the Steam runtime has nothing to do with it not being the "native" runtime...

Hopefully Valve sees this. The 12.04 deps are a pain in the ass as I understand it.

I was gonna comment here and argue in favor of Snaps, but the article gave a pretty good explanation and had me convinced 😊

Go vote on the madmans post!

In your own opinion, which is the more viable consumer technology, one with the most impact both to users in terms of distribution, and for the developers in reliably propagating their software to those users?

Secondly, if you're able to elaborate on the why, that'd be great.

For brownie points, if either of them allows distribution of Google Chrome (specifically, not Chromium!) - please say so, and link! :)

Sidenote: I'm completely uninterested in "allows me to run unstable gedit". I'm talking about mainstream software, akin to the Third Party selection available in Solus.

In case you missed it - unstable repo is still unstable!

If you update now, and you're lucky, this is the worst that'll happen. Completely unusable desktop. If you updated 4 minutes ago, you're toast.

Don't update on unstable ! :P We'll let you know when the deal has been sealed

Not a lot of strings yet, but the plumbing is in place for it to work.
