#Sociology is a "dazzling and compelling exercise, having as its subject-matter our own behaviour as social beings."

Doing Disability Differently

"What happens if, rather than seeing disability as a problem that architecture is expected to solve, we ask basic questions about how diverse human bodies actually occupy built space. Can disability − and ability − help us think more explicitly about habitation, how we envisage a ‘typical’ user and what impacts buildings have on their many and varied occupants?

"Contemporary geography, anthropology, phenomenology, science and technology, are looking at exactly this issue."

Psychology of Online Gender Bias
A psychology study finds that men are less likely to believe research on gender bias relative to women, and they are more likely to leave sexist comments as a result.

"This finding is consistent with other work suggesting that women are more likely than men to perceive sexism, in part because they are more likely to experience it. Similarly, men may be unlikely to acknowledge gender bias in order to maintain their own privileged position in the social hierarchy."

"Given the complexities of modern society, both domestically and internationally, the development of sophisticated tools in the computational social sciences will assume increasing importance as we address challenges in diplomacy, natural resource allocation, the migration of populations owing to drought, famine, and war, and a range of other issues," said Kim L. Boyer, Interim Dean of UAlbany's College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

The Science of Compassion.
"Now, lots of people learn about ideas in psychology, but Kellie Gillespie did something unusual. She took what she had learned in the class, and applied it in her own life.... 'Doing the course with Professor Plous most definitely opened my eyes to the reasons why people don't do something to help. It's easy to say 'I can't make a difference,' but everyone can make a difference.'"

Social science is vital to innovation:
Australia, by contrast, is a services economy, so we regularly innovate in health, management, social programs, education and finance – and we have the industries eager to take up these innovations. These will be the products of social science research. They are less tangible, but no less impactful and economically valuable, with inherent translation mechanisms.
