Expert : Sign Up for Social Security Retirement Online

According to a Social Security expert, at least for now, you want to sign up for Social Security retirement benefits online.

This is because online registration offers options which aren't available via phone or in-person registration -- at least for now.
Social Security's online retirement benefit application process is a safe way to file for your retirement benefit, because it asks you this one very important question.

Lower-Earning Spouse Should Not Delay Social Security

Determining when to start Social Security retirement benefits is especially difficult for married couples.

This advisor recommends that the spouse with the lower-earning spouse should initiate retirement benefits as soon as possible :

"
Which means ultimately, the ideal strategy for most couples is for the higher-earning spouse to delay as long as possible (which benefits them as long as either remains alive) and start the lower-earning spouse’s benefits as early as possible to gain the additional years of benefits.

Replacement Social Security Cards To Be Available Online

Currently, you either have to visit a Social Security office or mail in documentation to receive a replacement Social Security card.

However, soon residents in Washington and Wisconsin will be able to receive replacement cards online. Eventually, the program will roll out to other states.

However, if you need a new card due to name change, you'll still need to show up at the Social Security office or mail in documentation.

Tax Form Form SSA-1099 Available at SSA.GOV

Form SSA-1099 is a tax form that the Social Security Administration mails each year in January to Social Security beneficiaries. It shows how much income you received from Social Security so you can report it on your income tax return.

If you receive SSI (Supplemental Security Income) you will not receive form SSA-1099. SSI payments are not taxable by the federal government.

If you didn't receive form SSA-1099, you can get a copy by logging into your Social Security account at https://ssa.gov/myaccount/.

Official website of the U.S. Social Security Administration.

Criminals Now Targeting Social Security Instead of the IRS

As the IRS has tightened security regarding tax fraud, criminals are now targeting Social Security and its beneficiaries.

When providing personal information over the Internet, ensure you know EXACTLY who you're dealing with. Look carefully at the address bar in your browser.
As the feds put the screws to South Florida criminals who steal income-tax refunds, more thieves have come up with alternative scams to rip off government benefits — most notably, from elderly Social Security recipients, according to authorities.
