Advanced Hands-On Surgery Course in Brazil - Beyond Amazing!

We received our Course Completion Certificates at an absolutely amazing Brazilian steakhouse dinner last night. The DentalXP Group, which ran the course, treated us amazingly well. The patients were beyond amazing and put up with so much, so graciously and without complaint. The instructors, Brazilian proctors, and alumni, who all supervised and demonstrated and explained throughout us performing very advanced and complex periodontal surgeries, were INCREDIBLE!!!

In nearly 20 years of being a dentist, and through the 1,600+ hours of Continuing Education that I’ve attended, I can truly say that I have never experienced anything like this. I will absolutely be signing up for next year as soon as possible, so that we can continue providing you, our Charlotte patients, the most advanced and current materials and techniques to save, restore, and replace teeth and gums!

I wish I could share more photos of this incredible course that I’m attending in Brazil, but the international data plan gets eaten up by photos so fast, even just from my iPhone. I’ll have to write something up once I get home, but today was truly incredible! We got to do multiple complicated surgical procedures, overseen by world-class surgeons, for the most incredibly wonderful and understanding patients.

I can barely begin to describe it, but without a doubt, it’s the most incredible hands-on Continuing Education Seminar I’ve ever attended in nearly 20 years of practicing dentistry. I can’t wait to share more of it with everyone once I’m home!

A few iPhone snaps during the 90 minute shuttle ride from the São Paulo airport to the town of Santos, where the dental school and university are, at which the seminar is being held. São Paulo is apparently the biggest city in not just Brazil, but in all of South America. This is my first time south of San Antonio, Texas, so it’s all very new to me. One thing that struck me during this trip, is the incredible poverty of the favellas, or ghettos. Contrast that with the obvious skill and knowledge involved in the huge overpass being built. Once you get out of the city, the countryside is lush, green, and beautiful, although it was hard to get a good shot of it due to fog and low clouds. It’s about 75 degrees during the day, so I’m not missing the cold snap hitting Charlotte right now. 😁

I’ll be adding photos of the University and clinic and telling the story of the course, but I promise - no bloody surgery pictures to gross you out. 👍

While waiting for a couple other doctors to arrive so the shuttle can take us all to the hotel, I’m trying some Brazilian food. Don’t ask me to try and pronounce it though - Portuguese pronunciation is quite different from German or the little bit of French that I know.

At least the coffee is strong and dark!

Well y’all, this is how I’ll be spending the next 9.5 hours or so, as I’m on my way to São Paulo, Brazil! Departing at 10:50 from JFK, I’ll arrive about 11:25 according to the ticket. Once there, I’ll spend 3 days with 19 of my colleagues learning and improving our skills in periodontal (gum and bone) surgery for 8-9 hours/day. Then it will be another red-eye flight home, departing at 11pm Sunday and arriving about noon on Monday.

To tell the truth, I’m just as nervous as I am excited. It’s an amazing learning opportunity, but I put a lot of pressure on myself, too.

Well, almost time to take off - catch ya on the flip side!
