Early Apple memos were recently discovered in a Seattle thrift store and one of the topics mentioned – piracy. “In planning stages for the project, management projected that Apple could charge software developers a $500-$1,000 fee to implement protection on their programs. The threat of IP theft is in turn significant because of IP’s contribution to the U.S. economy. IP protection is important to every business, as trade secrets and trademarks pervade the private sector. According to the Global Intellectual Property Center of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, sales from IP-intensive firms totaled $6.9 trillion in 2013. IP-intensive industries are also responsible for 56 million jobs in the United States—roughly 35% of the U.S. labor force. Moreover, a job with an IP-intensive company pays on average 26% more than a job with a non-IP-intensive company.
