UNL prof's 3-D model could help manage U.S. bridge maintenance crisis:

A University of Nebraska-Lincoln associate professor has developed a data management tool that could help officials monitor deteriorating bridges and prioritize their repair using SketchUp. The model allows engineers, with a click of a mouse, to identify which parts of a bridge need fixing.

"This represents a paradigm shift in terms of data management.”

Mike Hathorn: 3D Printing in the Classroom on Vimeo http://ow.ly/JgKOZ

For almost 11 years our Education Manager Superstar Allyson has been involved with trying to make SketchUp ubiquitous in schools worldwide. She has met with thousands of educators in that time, but there is one who stands out among all the others that is her favorite. His name is Mike Hathorn, and he teaches history and technology classes at Hartford High School in Vermont.

Last Fall, he set up a Maker lab in his classroom, and now Lynda.com has documented Mike, his students, and their work at Hartford High School. It's one of the best profiles we've ever seen of Mike's work as an educator, but also of SketchUp in a K-12 classroom (thanks Lynda!).

We make an amazing product here that reaches a lot of kids, some of whom are otherwise not engaged academically through traditional methods.

Please take 9 minutes out of your day to treat yourself to this video: http://ow.ly/JgKOZ

We are so excited to celebrate the Chinese New Year with everyone and share this wonderful SketchUp model designed especially for us on this occasion by Chinese designer Liu Xinvu. Read more about him and the design below...

Liu Xinyu 刘新雨 is a designer who was born in 80s at Beijing, is a guru of SketchUp and a professional landscape, urban planning and architectural designer. Now he is working for a famous landscape designer company at Beijing. (Company name: 北京中科易合景观规划设计有限公司)

The idea behind the SketchUp design: "It is typical Chinese traditional "paper-cut" art work----- children are setting off firecrackers. We often decorate doors and windows with paper cuts. especially at Chinese new Year. in this works. Liu Xinyu put lots SketchUp logos here in behalf of firecrackers. SketchUp Red and China red paper cut characters together. imply SketchUp like firecrackers will bring luck and happy to people."

The idea and meaning behind Firecrackers:
"Firecrackers are used to drive away the evil in China. Right after 12:00PM on New Year's Eve, fireworks will be launched to celebrate the coming of the New Year as well as to drive away the evil. It is believed that the person who launched the first firework of the New Year will obtain good luck."

3D for Everyone
Introduction
Welcome to SketchUp's official home on Google+

What's SketchUp? We like to say that SketchUp is the 3D modeling application for everyone. It's designed to be easy to learn, easy to use, and (this is the kicker) fun!

We build two versions of SketchUp:
  • SketchUp Pro helps professionals to design, visualize, and communicate in both 3D and 2D.
  • SketchUp Make is the free, non-commercial version of SketchUp for personal or educational projects.
On this Plus Page, we'll be sharing the amazing work that our users have created in SketchUp and keeping you up-to-date with the latest news, blog posts, and tips. We are all students of great design, so expect to see a lot of that here as well!

We'll do our best to respond to your comments and mentions, but we can't be everywhere at once. If you have questions about using SketchUp, check out our resource links below. Our amazing community has a knack for helping people make the most of SketchUp.
