We've all been eagerly awaiting an updated version of MOZ's rankings factors (last one created in 2011). It's great to see that they are getting close to wrapping up the 2013 version. Excited to see the output. This article from +Rand Fishkin shows some output that will likely be included in the 2013 Ranking Factors update. A Must read.

Things move pretty fast in the marketing world. Here are the five items from the past week you need to know about – and why.

America demographic changes over the last 50 years
via Pew Research on August 22, 2013 http://goo.gl/MDRSJs

Demographics and racial disparity change over time. As a marketer needing to reach a specific audience, operating on old assumptions might miss your target.  Pew Research released an updated and interactive survey to help you better understand current and historic racial gaps in high school graduation, life expectancy, voter turnout, home ownership, income and more.

This is sure to uncover some incorrect assumptions. +Travis Unwin

Put your perceptions of America racial gaps up to the test. +Jackie Smith

An estimated 1.8 trillion display ads were paid for last year that were not actually viewed by users
via the IAB blog on August 12, 2013 http://goo.gl/OgBo5i

Be prepared by the end of the year for a new pricing model in digital advertising, "viewability." Industry leaders are planning a transition pricing model away from the industry standard impression, but rather how many users actually viewed the ad unit.

I just hope content powerhouses don't see this as the need to further 'bloombergize' their homepages and article pages. +Ryan Gudmundson

We'll be reaching out to vendors to make sure this is on their radar for 2014! +Jamie Abbruscato

Positive search lift correlated with great Google+ content
via MOZ on August 20, 2013 http://goo.gl/BlGpi5

Unlike other social properties, links shared on Google+ pass PageRank ("link juice",) giving power and authority to the original content. We are now seeing huge search benefits for those that stay active and engaging on Google+, creating content that users find valuable. Still undecided if Google+ is right for you brand? Here's yet another reason why Google+ cannot be ignored!

Amazing what happens when you create and nurture a network of people that value the content you publish and share. +Jackie Smith

Quite a boon for brands brands that want more than their tweets showing up in SERPs. +Travis Unwin

Search lift is more about "sharing" than "liking"
via Y Combinator on August 20, 2013 http://goo.gl/XlMqfB

Don't assume that +1s or other social signals cause the boost in rankings. In fact, Google's top Spam Cop Matt Cutts uncharacteristically joined a geeky-forum to make the case and correct the correlations =  causation logical fallacy.

It's more than just collecting +1s. That's a good indicator of quality content, but "links" in Google+ are weighted by the authority of that Google+ page, the author of the page, the author of the link ... and more. It's complicated! +Chris Corak

Mobile shopping couch potatoes?
via Nielsen on August 12, 2013 http://goo.gl/NqTGOz

Just because shoppers are on their mobile phones doesn't mean they are on-the-go. According to Nielsen, most people use their smartphones and tablets at home. Understanding consumer preferences for devices and where devices are being used is critical to capitalizing on the customer journey.

Targeting mobile devices is so 2012. Today, layering in location data with device configuration can - and should - provide a tailored experience. +Travis Unwin

Knowing a shopper is more likely to take to its mobile device for the sake of convenience over the need for on-the-go information says a lot about mobile intent. It's closer aligned to desktop intent than many would've thought. +Chris Corak
