A quick report on the data collected and findings from network interference measurements by OONI Mobile App run by the public that helped confirm blocking of live.undi.info election results website by Malaysiakini.

Thank you to those helped run the tests during GE14 especially when live.undi.info was reported as blocked!

Many sites are still officially blocked by orders of MCMC such as Medium.com. We will continue to monitor and test for Internet censorship and interference as we have before.

Initial #GE14 candidate website is up. We're now filling in as much info as we can on all 222 Parliament seats and 504 state seats (minus Sarawak)

http://ge14.sinarproject.org

Site design & performance improvements will continue until May 9th.

We will then continue and move the winning candidates and covert it into a Wakil Rakyat site to keep tabs on elected representatives, including using the open data gathered for other civic tech uses such as building advocacy tools, linking it to their work in legislature like pardocs.sinarproject.org and anti-corruption.

Thank you to all the people who helped fund the work so far, and the volunteers who have spent hours and more to come, trying to find as much details as possible on the hundreds of candidates that will be officially nominated tomorrow.

Amazing long form investigative journalism piece here on the billions of ringgit lost by FELDA and subsidiaries over the years from illegal sturgeon farming to “schneeballen” snowball dough factories.

Funds that could have benefited and improved the lives of thousands of rural Malay farmers and their families.

The Other combed through years of Auditor General Reports and Parliamentary Documents made available through our Parliamentary Documents and Government Documents Online Archives projects.

Resources:

- Parliamentary Documents (2013 onwards) pardocs.sinarproject.org
- National Auditor General Reports (1997 onwards)

UPDATE: This law is now gazetted and enforceable as of today 11 April 2018

BREAKING: Malaysian Anti-Fake News Bill got Royal approval this Monday, and the gazetted law was just published on Attorney General website.

At this time there is no date of enforcement published and PDF links to both English and Malay gazetted laws are broken.

"[The new law] applies to non-Malaysian citizens internationally if 'fake news' published overseas involves Malaysian citizens," said a Khairil Yusof, team coordinator at Sinar Project, an organization that defends digital rights of citizens in Malaysia.

"For example the WSJ journalists that broke the story [that alleged Prime Minister Razak's corruption] face the possibility of being jailed and fined when visiting Malaysia."

Early scan of Anti-Fake News Act 2018 (en) on pardocs.sinarproject.org

Usually these bills are automatically linked to and searchable on billwatcher.sinarproject.org but government Parliament website is often slow in adding them, especially for urgent bills that are tabled on same day.

Uploaded on pardocs.sinarproject.org as first reading is later this afternoon. There will be a second reading and the third reading is the vote.

We are against proposed Fake News Legislation because it restricts all alternative views and interpretations, other than the official government viewpoint.

Furthermore government statements itself cannot be verified by academics, media, civil society and the public if official info sources and data are secret or not published.

Such legislation is detrimental to a healthy and functioning democracy, including basic freedom of expression of citizens to have their own opinions. Research will also be stifled as data or reports that are counter to official statements will be considered as fake news and not on the merit of the research methods or findings itself.
