Saffron loaves, inspired by a challah recipe these have saffron soaked in the water before the eggs etc are added, and a good dollop of honey for good measure. We grow saffron so I can afford to be liberal.

So I have just started working on a new website for Heorot. After a lot of dithering I’ve decided to go with a Wordpress site, partly to brush up my Wordpress familiarity. It will probably take me a while as I’ll have to upload all the images again.

Off to Faire in the morning and we are 90% packed, thank goodness for having a horse float.

DHL have really let us down and the tent which should have been picked up a month ago only got picked up yesterday so no way are we going to have it in the next couple of days. Such a shame as the team have been hard at it for the last couple of weeks preparing poles and ropes and making an extension for the table. So we will squeeze into our 15’ square delapidated old motor tent again. Never mind, we will have a whole year to make the new dining tent truly awesome for next Faire.

Today I am dyeing linen with weld to make into a pleated Viking underdress. I left the cloth soaking in the mordant overnight which is what it suggested in the Patricia Barnes linen book so hopefully that will help the dye penetrate the linen as linen can be quite hard to dye naturally.

Making random things on the weekend. In this project I’ve used scraps from my handwoven cloth for the Viking coat to make a custom jewellery roll for my tortoise brooches and other Viking jewellery.

After having my Flickr account irrevocably locked I am trying out google photos. Here are my picks from this year’s Creative Fibre conference.

New tools finally arrived today. I have had a problem from when I started weaving, I acquired plenty of free mystery yarn on spools but no idea how much of it in terms of length. This made it hard to plan projects because you really need to know how much you have.

And I love my sectional beam but have found that I really need to be able to measure exactly how much yarn I have wound onto each bobbin or I end up with a bunch of unnecessary joins.

So I have splashed out and bought a McMorran balance for estimating length by weight based on a small snippet of yarn, and a Schacht yardage counter for winding the bobbins. The latter was quite expensive for what it is but I expect that it will be invaluable.

Of course I will get to a point where I have used all my mystery yarn but by then I will have forgotten the spend.

In Hamilton (Cluain) for Lochac mid winter coronation and it is belting down. Meanwhile my library's car park was flooding yesterday and they had several power outages over night. NZ rain is biblical. Could be an interesting morning.

So I'm in a bit of a weaving lull at the moment. I jumped at a 8 shaft Bartlett loom which came up on trademe and that's great but it meant pulling my other looms apart and moving things around. The 8 shaft is back together but needs some resettling and the 4 shaft is in pieces in my workroom. Meanwhile I am spinning a silk/merino blend for the weft of a scarf for Rowley.
