Blast from the past - was thinking about this today; Flow is the state where you stop noticing the joins between the units of Attention.

Recently, I've had a couple of clients put this forward; yes, our digital design is a bit rubbish, but it's as rubbish as all our competitors, which makes it okay, because people have learned how to manage their way through our websites and digital stuff.

The implication being that to improve it would somehow break people's mental models.

It makes a kind of twisted sense, I guess.

Tech pundits' obsession with protagonists and narratives stops them from seeing (and talking about) what's happening to computing, I reckon. Tablets aren't replacing desktop machines but adding to them. (For exactly the same reason, the rise of stuff like Glass is utterly inevitable.)

Goto the heading in my post called "help engine" http://libraryclips.blogsome.com/2009/04/01/social-search-help-engines-and-sense-making/

I go to people (real life or a social network) when I need back and forth chatter to help me learn. Also my people know my context, they know me (sometime they know me more than I think I know me), so their replies are very spot on for me.

Instagram person explaining to team how to think about design changes:

> Systrom says he treated the controversy as a learning experience, telling his team to consider Instagram a small country and to imagine how people would feel if someone had suddenly changed all the road signs to a different color.

Yep, that's about right. And that works on many levels other than the colour of the chuffin' buttons. . .

When I lived in Czechoslovakia, a friend gave me some photos they took during the Velvet Revolution. One of them has always stuck with me.
