I was standing on the road when I took this picture. The water is within 5 feet or so from the level of the Montevina Road. This is the small lake west of Highway 17, which is perhaps 15 feet above the level of the main lake on the other side of the highway. It spills over into the main lake through a culvert under the freeway when it gets this high. It rose over 36 feet in the last 7 days.

The 5-year drought in Northern California appears to be over. This morning, I took a photo of the water at the Lexington Reservoir nearly spilling over the James J. Lenihan dam. Then, only a few hours later, it was spilling over:

On my morning walk with Dave and Patrizia the temperature was below freezing. Frost coated everything around the lake. I did not envy the duck swimming there.

I remember how my parents used to discuss politics. They didn't argue, they talked.

My father always registered as a Republican. My mother always registered democrat. It wasn't that they disagreed. It was so they could have a say in each primary, as a couple.

My father was always a skeptic. My mother was an optimist.

Together, they made better decisions than either one may have alone.

I remember my mother talking to my sister one day.

"You know," she said, "Someday, we will have a woman president."

My father heard her, and snickered. "Right," he said sarcastically. "And that year, the Cubs will win the World Series."

Looking forward to Wednesday.
