Working as the flight line engineer on test day, I get to watch the action up close. During this tow test run, I waited at the end of the runway to see the Dream Chaser® spacecraft braking to a stop. I’m excited to see it stopping in the same spot on flight day!

If you have followed the Dream Chaser® spacecraft for a while, you will recognize the fuzzy dice! I took this picture while I was helping power up & switch on electronics before testing.

Using a heavy duty pickup truck, we tow the vehicle down the runway until it reaches the target test speed. The tow crew then releases it so we can test the guidance and control systems. This will ensure that it will steer straight down the runway on flight day. At the end of each test run, a flurry of activity takes place to get ready for the next one. Engineers hurry to check systems and take measurements while technicians prepare the vehicle to transport back to the starting point.

Test days start very early! While it isn’t fun waking up this early to go to work, I am rewarded with an amazing view at sunrise! This morning we also had the Moon and Venus watching over us.

Hi space enthusiasts! Eric Cain here. SNC gave me keys to the account today, so expect some cool behind-the-scenes access! As an aerospace engineer at SNC for the past 12 years, I have worked a lot of exciting programs including the Dream Chaser® spacecraft. Currently, I am working on location at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center where it is undergoing testing.
