Researchers from MIT are working on technology and programming that may one day impart computers with the ability to "see" and "think."
As anyone who has used a reverse image search knows, there have been advances in this computer field recently, but they aren't without limitations.

Quantum mechanics done right

"Contemplating the possibility of pilot wave theory might lead to a fresh interpretation of quantum weirdness, one that prompts physicists to rethink their longstanding assumptions about the true nature of the quantum world." In a piece for NOVA Next, writer Jennifer Ouellette describes thought-provoking research from MIT's John Bush and Daniel Harris.

Live video streams are awesome.. But you know what's even better? "Live-buffered" video streams with accelerated playback speed! :-)

For example, Microsoft streamed a full-day marathon from their Build event today. Lots of awesome stuff, which is great to see! However, who has the time to watch it all in "real-live-time" -- right? Well, HTML5 to the rescue: tune in to the stream, hit pause, and let it buffer... then resume, and catch up on last X-buffered minutes at whatever speed you like. By my measurements, I saved myself 2hrs+ today with this fun trick! :-)

The only thing you'll need to make this work is the "video speed controller" extension: bit.ly/video-speed - that's the menu in the top left corner of the screenshot that allows you to adjust the playback speed of any HTML5 video, regardless of whether the underlying player offers this functionality or not (MSFT's did not).

A new material that does calculus?

Penn Engineering's Nader Engheta has laid out a theory for a material that can act like an analog computer and perform mathematical operations on light waves when they pass through it.

Plants Can Sense When They Are About to Be Eaten (& Respond Accordingly)

In 2014, researchers from the University of Missouri successfully demonstrated that plants can sense when they are being eaten, and respond by increasing the toxicity levels (in the form of mustard oils) in an attempt to keep predators away.

According to the article, plants sensed that they were being eaten by sensing acoustic energy made by herbivores chewing. They discriminated between this acoustic energy, and other forms of acoustic energy. Plants thus respond to herbivore-generated vibrations in a selective and ecologically meaningful way.

How Fourier Transform is helping Digital Music and Streaming
This is the Fourier Transform. You can thank it for providing the music you stream every day, squeezing down the images you see on the Internet into tiny little JPG files, and even powering your noise-canceling headphones. Here’s how it works.

Interesting paper by the Jet Propulsion Lab at NASA on replacing lenses with glitter.
Space telescopes may one day make use of glitter-like materials to help take images of new worlds, according to JPL researchers.
