As you may know from the last edition, Mike Clarke has now retired from his writing career, therefore I have featured this interview as a tribute to Mike and his brilliant work for SKM over the past 25 years. We received dozens of letters from SKM readers expressing their sadness at hearing this news. Mike’s philosophical writing has had a profound effect on many karateka of all ages over the years. He leaves a huge gap regarding such contributions. He will be sadly missed by many SKM readers and myself included. EDITOR, this article is now available online

I’ve written an article in the up coming issue of SKM (due out 24th August) which I think will be very interesting for most karateka. I’ve thought about this for years and we regularly have a laugh about it at our dojo because everyone does this, except the two ladies in our club. It’s a technical point (a strange habit) which I have never seen mentioned in 45 years of karate training either in books or magazines (until I’ve brought it up now that is), and yet it really does exist and 99% of male karateka do this strange habit without realising it and this includes senior instructors as well! I’ve included several photos with the article to demonstrate the point. I bet ‘you' do it too, without knowing it! I know I do and I can’t seem to stop either. This strange habit occurs in one of the most common, basic techniques in karate. Interestingly female karateka don’t seem to do this, or not so exaggerated as male karateka, which is quite a debatable point. So, what is this ‘strange habit’ and which technique does it occur in? Check it out in the latest magazine. Editor.

More sad news for the British Shotokan fraternity.
Birmingham Instructor sensei Cyril Cummins 8th Dan passed away this morning at 7am.
Sensei Cummins was featured several times in early editions of SKM and I had the pleasure of doing courses in Blackpool with Cyril in the early 1990’s.
Condolences to his partner Dorian and all his students past and present. Editor.
