HUGE Google Announcement Starting On April 21, 2015!

Hello Fellow Business Owners,

Google has announced that as of April 21, 2015, it will modify its search algorithm to expand on mobile-friendly factors.

Google is just giving the people what they want: A better mobile user experience, with relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for the device on which they are viewed.

According to Google’s research, 75 percent of mobile device users prefer a mobile-friendly site, and 67 percent of users are more likely to purchase items from a mobile site.

To stay competitive, companies that haven’t already taken the steps to make their site mobile-friendly are going to have to follow suit if they want to remain competitive.

What factors are important in whether a site is considered mobile-friendly by Google? Requiring users to pinch, squeeze and zoom to read text or to view a page is NOT mobile-friendly. Neither are links or buttons that are close together and thus hard to select.

A streamlined experience with minimal clicks for visitors to get where they want to go and complete common tasks is always important to a website. Most critical though: A consistent interface that is easy to use across all devices.

Responsive Web Design (RWD) produces a website that “responds” – adjusts and optimizes - to the screen size of the device on which the site is being viewed, be it a desktop computer, tablet or mobile phone. (6) Reasons a Facebook Page Does Not Replace Your Business Website!

As businesses become more and more comfortable with being on Facebook, I find that there are some businesses that are getting TOO comfortable! They think that they no longer need a website because being on Facebook will suffice.

I'm here to tell you that a Facebook business page does not replace your website.

Here's why:

1. You don't own it!

Facebook owns your page. They can shut it down at any time if they believe you've violated any Facebook rules. Or they could change the way pages are set up and your business page might suffer from it. Who knows what could happen! Bottom line is that you do not control what happens because it's not on your own domain.

2. Consumers may think poorly of your company because it doesn't have a website.

I've been directed to Facebook pages for plenty of businesses and it always makes me think twice about the business. I wonder if they are in it for the long haul or just seeing if this business can make a go of it. Don't make people uncomfortable by not having a website. Consumers just expect it.

3. Facebook is a closed network.

If someone isn't a member of Facebook, they won't be able to see your page. You would hope that businesses who are opting for the Facebook-only route would have a target market that widely uses and accepts Facebook, but it's not always the case. I meet more and more people who decide not to use Facebook - in all age groups. Why shut them out?

4. You're relying on Facebook to get found online.

When you have your own website, you're in control of how you'll get found online. That means you can have your site optimized to show in search engine listings for the keywords you want to rank for.

5. You can't design a Facebook page to be like a website.

How can people possibly learn enough about your business on a Facebook page? Unless the business has a very robust Facebook page with a lot of tabs, you just don't have enough room on a Facebook page for people to learn about your business. 

6. There is too much distraction on Facebook.

Getting and keeping people's attention online is so difficult to do. When you have people on your Facebook page, they are constantly distracted by their friends and ads. On your own website, you still have to work hard to keep their attention, but you have more control to do it.

Let's face it. Facebook pages were not set up to replace websites. They were designed to be a place for your business to interact with your target market.
I believe all social media networks serve as a platform to get people back to your website. Just another way to get your business out there. and they do a great job at that . . . but don't try to make them do a job they just weren't built for!
