Mussels were on sale for $2.99/lb. when I went grocery shopping this morning AND one of my favorite budget cavas was on sale for $5.99/bottle, and with prices like those, I couldn't resist.

So I bought 2.5 pounds of mussels, a bottle of cava, and a baguette in addition to our regular groceries, planning to make a special dinner in for me and +Dean Robinson. (I made spaghetti in advance for the big monsters, who don't care for mussels.)

I sauteed some leeks, tomatoes and tarragon in a little butter and olive oil, deglazed with a splash of white wine, poured in a little of the weekly chicken stock and a little water, seasoned to taste, brought it up to a boil, then threw my thoroughly cleaned and de-bearded mussels until they all just opened up. (You don't want to overcook your shellfish or they won't be as tender and sweet as they can be.)

Hot baguette out of the oven, cava on the side, and Blues Clues on the telly for Izz.

Date night in for under $20 and under 20 minutes.

Not bad. :)

What's dinnering with you, peeps?
