If getting a van, driving off to the hills, and staying in nature is your thing, more inspiration here.

Hop on a train alone, cherish your own company, sleep alone on grass under a starry sky, say no to any company that pulls you away from your dreams, be a friend but let go of the fear of being alone, wonder what your part in this huge world is, like yourself.

There are mountains that you must cross alone for nothing befits such trips other than solitude.

I just wrote a post on the best places in India for the lovers of calm and solitude; read it at the link below.

Name a place you want to travel alone to; or tag/name somebody who is your best company on trips (yes, you can put your dog's name!)

An ode to Goddess Durga, this Sanskrit shloka refers to her as the daughter of mountains, powerful than all Gods come together and slayer of Mahishasura, the demon that nobody could kill. She is perhaps the most revered of all Hindu deities, a female form that is powerful beyond imagination.

Devotees throng a Durga puja pandal in Delhi, just before the Maha Arti on Ashtami, one of the most sacred days of Durga Puja. There, right in the center, is the head priest getting ready for the ritual.

While I might not believe in any religion, choosing the best from all, bowing to Goddess Durga is more of a feminist calling.

As to why we need feminism, this world has its answers in the crime reports on daily news telecasts.

"Silence is the language of God. All else is poor translation."
- Rumi

Chaddars (shawls) for sale at Sarkhej Roza, tomb of Sufi Saint Sheikh Ahmed Khattu Ganj Baksha. These shawls are offered at the tomb as a token of respect for the saint.

Open to people of all religions, this marvelous structure (compared to Athens' Acropolis) was the hub of Sufi practices in the region. Poets, musicians, writers and travellers from all over the world used to gather here for discourses and Sufi music.

An ancient structure, this place makes you wonder at its solitude. The calm that prevails inside even when a number of visitors are around is surprising.

Silence, indeed, is the language of God, if you believe in one. I spent an afternoon loitering in the complex, watching people come in and go, heads bowed, silently making a wish, lost deep in their thoughts. The only sound that was remarkable was of squeaking sparrows who were nesting on a giant tree in the courtyard. I loved the calm here, the silence of peace. Or the peace of silence!

"Behind the waterfall of love, you'll find me, hiding in a barrel."

Isn't that the scariest thing of all, running away from anything that says love? People, friends, pets, houses, a regular life - everything that takes you anywhere near love.

Hiding in a barrel is, of course, the easy way out for you're never vulnerable, sure that nobody would ever see you broken like the many streams of a waterfall.

I run away too. And I'm sure a lot of us do, run and hide in our barrel of certainties.

But then, waterfalls are beautiful. Aren't they?

Let's try love, compassion for a change. We might get broken again, but we'll be breathing fresh air - away from the barrels of our scared hearts.
Captured this one while sitting at the foot of a cascading waterfall in Mcleodganj, India.

"One could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofs,
Or the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls."

While these lines were written in praise of the beautiful city of Kabul, they very well define the place in this photo.

If you've ever wondered if you can fall in love with a place, this tiny village in Kinnaur (Himachal Pradesh) will take you by your hand and tell you the answer. For somebody like me, who has never felt homesick, this village made me privy to the feeling of homesickness.

It isn't my home. But then, isn't every place my home.

"Home is not a place. It's a feeling."

A feeling that I had in this tiny #Buddhist #monastery, where I stayed for a night at a monk's invitation to participate in the annual festival the next morning.

Home is a feeling that I had in a tent by the lake; a feeling I had while chatting with the nuns in a Himalayan village; a feeling I had while teaching Tibetan kids in a colony for the Tibetans in exile; a feeling I had after a day's hike, as I saw the Sun turning huge and orange and then drown.

Someday, I'll be back to the meadows and pines. That day will be soon. Have you found a home yet?

Travel detox.
This is what my homestay chef treated me to after a hard day's trek in Sikkim. Hours of trekking followed by helping out monks at a monastery, filling butter lamps, watching and playing football with them, doing some somersaults in the large, green meadows. Travel
#detox yes.
