As part of my research for Eldritch Realms, I have been reading Magic and Superstition in Europe by Michael D. Bailey. This is a really excellent overview from antiquity to modern times. I learned a lot from it, especially about the parallel development of learned magic alongside folk magic. Obviously, historical magic is lower fantasy than D&D or Harry Potter, but this book shows there is plenty of variety of meaningful, playable stuff that historical magic could do!
