Staying Fit in a Wheelchair

Don’t assume that just because you’re in a chair, you can no longer exercise. It’s true that you may not be able to exercise the way you used to, but that may actually be a benefit. Since you can no longer work as you once did, look for new ways to expend your energy. If you branch out and try new ways to exercise in your chair, things you didn’t try when you were able-bodied, you won’t be constantly comparing your new workout experience to “how it used to be”.

Keeping your body moving as much as possible should be a priority no matter what your disability. Having a routine and regular wheelchair exercises will help you in so many ways. You can increase flexibility, strength, improve your mobility, strengthen your heart and lungs, and help you control your weight.

When you first start working out, no matter what your condition, you always want to start off at a slow pace and increase your difficulty as your body becomes use to the exercises. It is very important to take a few minutes to warm up before you begin working out, and a few minutes to cool down when you are done. There are two main exercise techniques you want to focus on in your wheelchair, resistance training and strength training. Resistance training uses large, stretchy rubber bands that you wrap around a sturdy object. (make sure you chair is locked in position) You can use an object such as a door, or the arm of you chair. (make sure your chair is locked in position)

Good Waist & Stomach Exercises for the Wheelchair Bound

If you are wheelchair bound, it's important to exercise your waist and stomach muscles so that they don't become weak and atrophy. To help you exercise your abdominals, there are several conditioning exercises that you can perform while seated in your wheelchair. If your fitness level is still high, consider performing upper body cardio and weight-bearing exercises in your wheelchair, such as basketball, weightlifting or chair yoga.

Without Mike and Leo, my chair would never get fixed. And I swear that they're like my "racing team." Yesterday, my chair suffered minor damage in Downey; this morning, Leo from Sherman Oaks got me fixed and back on the road. BY FAR, the best med supply store in the Valley. And when it comes to wheelchair maintenance, they just get it!!! :-)

I have enjoyed repair services on my wheelchair with Sherman Oaks Medical Supply in Pacoima, California I would not buy any Medical supply's other Medical Supply Stores. I have been very happy with Sherman Oaks, Other Medical Store in the Valley would not help me. Jack you were the only person that has helped me. The years that I have known Sherman Oaks Medical Supply Store in Sherman Oaks, California is the only store that helps out the Deaf and the disable and also understands there needs, Jack your macanic's in Pacoima have help me a lot. When something is wrong with my wheelchair, it gets fixed. Thank you Jack for helping me I know that it was hard to understand me, but we and your girls at the Sherman Oaks Store Learned how to communicate , you and your staff can communicate with a person that is Deaf, all of your staff have received calls from me talking with an interpreter for the Deaf. My questions that I have asked I get my answers back. ARTURO HERRERA

The staff are very courteous and willing to help with your supply needs. They help you with making good and budget friendly decisions if things aren't covered by insurance. They are convenient and usually have what you need in stock which is fantastic when you need something right away for your loved one.

I took my sister's wheelchair to Sherman Oaks Medical Supplies for repair as it was "falling apart". I was concerned that it would be a day or two as she needed it right away; however, Leo fixed in just a few minutes tightening it up. He understood the situation, was very efficient and courteous. I was so pleased and my sister was grateful as well.

MOST AMAZING BUSINESS!! I just got 2nd home in Santa Monica and left my CPAP in Vegas. Called everywhere for CPAP machine to no avail. Found Sherman Oaks Medical supplies online and left message with their answering service. Jack the owner called me back immediately and arranged for someone to open store at 9pm on Saturday night. Sold me Resmed Airsense 10 at the best advertised price and would have paid more but he said no will sell sat lowest price. Thank you Jack great service thanks for saving me!
