Recent events have spawned activist groups such as Black Lives Matter, a social justice group determined to bring attention to inequality, police brutality and racism,

Jonathan Thompson, executive director of the National Sheriff’s Association, said he has had many discussions with sheriffs across the country who have said departments are seeing significantly fewer applications as a result of low morale and the current focus on police misconduct.

But to LEO's the positives still outweigh the negatives. The increased media attention on police misconduct has only reinforced the idea of what the job would be like – dangerous and difficult.
However, some union officials and experts have said increased police scrutiny in the U.S. has damaged recruiting.

Two men who attempted to flee from California police Friday needed to be rescued from the snow Saturday morning.

The fugitives feared they would "freeze to death" said Lt. Chris Stoops, a spokesman for the Department of Fish and Wildlife.

“I have never seen two people happier to go to jail,” said Lieutenant Jim Byers of the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office.
Two men who ran from police into the freezing wilderness later called 911 and begged to be rescued.

What would you do if Shaquille O' Neal joined in a game of basketball with the kids in your neighborhood?

The 4-time champ made a surprise stop at the Gainesville Police Department to shoot some hoops with the members of the community.

"These kids will never forget the day Shaq rolled up to their house to play ball," the police department wrote on its Facebook page along with video of the game.

The National Sheriff's Association CEO and executive director, Jonathan Thompson, has called on the President to stop the removal of surplus military equipment from communities and return equipment already taken.

Jonathan Thompson said today at least 12 sheriff's offices have had equipment seized by the federal government because it might "intimidate local residents."

The National Sheriffs' Association has created a map of where equipment restrictions have occurred. To view the map click on the link below.

The Smith County Sheriff's Office is having a funneral for killing Smith County Precinct 5 Constable K-9 Ogar.

Ogar was killed Tuesday, Jan. 19, during a traffic stop after the armed suspect fled into the woods.

Our thoughts go out to the Smith County Sheriffs Office, their community, and Ogar's handler.
