We just updated our Transparency Report, showing how many requests Google gets for information about its users. But we're not allowed to give the full story because the U.S. government says that requests under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) must be kept secret. We can tell you this: Requests have more than doubled around the world since 2009, and more than tripled in the U.S.: http://g.co/u5sp

Share this if you believe you have a right to know what our governments are up to.

Hoping I'll see the northern lights at some point tonight, although not sure I'll have the stamina to stay up... after trying and failing to see them in Iceland (and planning a trip to Alaska in the autumn to try to catch them there) it would be pretty ironic if I ended up seeing them at home in NYC.

Update to the Reviewing Scale on Google+ Local

Today it’s easier than ever to write accurate, useful reviews on Google+ Local, thanks to the updated rating scale we rolled out. If you want to rate the food at a restaurant, or the quality of a mechanic, just choose "poor - fair," “good,” “very good,” or "excellent". Behind the scenes, we’ll convert your ratings into numbers and factor them into the business' precise 30-point score that shows up in Google+, Search and Maps.

Give it a try! Click on the Google+ Local icon in the left navigation bar, search for a local spot and click "Write a review.” Happy reviewing!

This is a really nice neighbourhood bar in the West Village, with a fantastic wine selection and great food options (the crostini are all delicious). The staff are really knowledgeable, and can help fine options perfectly suited to your tastes.

It's a good option for groups too, with the big open seating areas.

If you're interested in donating a bit of money (no matter how little) to help some girls learn about robots, check out this fundraising campaign from one of G+'s most passionate advocates for encouraging women in technology!

Fundraising for a Robotics kit

Most people know that I am keen to help females into Technology as much as possible. I would love to even up the numbers. I am not doing this at the expense of males in any way, and equally encourage anyone with a great interest.
My son is in the local robotics club, but due to restricted parts and budget, my daugher is unable to join. Several other females have shown interest in joining also, however due to not having enough parts, they are unable to.

The Robotics they use are the Vex ones, as these are the ones used by all other schools, and the only way we can compete with other schools, however they are a little expensive.

My goal is to raise the money for another 'Classroom and Competition Robotics Kit' plus a few other parts so they can make the best robotics they can. The cost of this kid is just  over $1200NZD plus the other parts so i have put my goal at $2000

Whilst this is personal fund raising , all the proceeds will be going to the local high school robotics team to spend on the items

If you can help, and wish to help some females in technology, please donate something, it does not even have to be a huge amount, every little bit helps.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart

Liz

Love Yamasho - they have the best selection of songs, and the lady who runs reservations is super accommodating. It's all done in private rooms, which is absolutely my preference, so in that respect it's perfect. The service can be a bit slow for drinks, but mostly it's a great evening of awesome karaoke.

I don't really go there for the food in the restaurant upstairs, but that's pretty good too - highly recommended as a pre-singing strength builder ;)

Hmmm not sure - maybe not that late actually, as it's technically a bookshop. I'll try and find out.

trying to keep up the #30daychallenge  (just probably won't be a consecutive 30 days ;) )

Cafe Henrici
Niederdorfstrasse 1, 8001 Zürich, Switzerland
This place is a lovely surprise in what I thought was an overwhelmingly touristy area in Zurich. My favourite Swiss/Alpine food (flammekuche) is extremely well represented on the menu, with a number of delicious varieties - I went for the traditional version, but the chicken curry one was also delicious. The coffee menu is huge and has loads of interesting coffee-based hot drink and cocktail variants - sadly I was jetlagged and therefore in no position to ingest caffeine, but they looked great. The outdoor seating area is really nice and probably great for people watching on a busy day (we were there on a Sunday evening) - the inside looks great too though. Overall a wonderful option for a light meal and drinks.

take the #30daychallenge  and give us your opinion on businesses in your local area!

Kyoto is good food but overpriced for dinner ($10-$12) especially when you aren't being weighted on. However, lunch is another thing entirely. They have a chicken hibachi grill lunch special which is only $6, and you get a good amount of food, so it's definitely worth it. If you're into sushi, they also have a sushi deal in the from 4pm-6pm for $3.95 a roll.

Had an amazing night ripping up the dancefloor here - they have very fun DJs on weekend nights. And the vibe after work any night is great too - love their creative Guinness cocktails too (the Campfire is a must try). Really good option in this area!

Edit: have since been for food and I can heartily recommend it. In particular, the vegetarian fried chicken was amazing. Not a sentence I thought I'd ever say (as I am actually a meat eater) but it's basically as tasty as the real thing. Only went here for drinks at the bar, but loved the vibe and the food looked amazing. Super-friendly bartenders, and the music selection was amazing! They were playing awesome old-school RnB when I was there... Would highly recommend that you pay this place a visit.

Awesome place to hang out and get work done, with super-fast wifi and good drinks/snacks (including wine and beer). You can either sit in the limited-seating front part for free wifi, or in the back part for $2/hour (lots of outlets, etc).

One or the best slices I've had in the city - highly recommend the eggplant/aubergine! And Bobby's a charmer :)

Thai food mecca for vegetarians and very tasty even if you're not. Mix of veggie-only dishes and fake meat-type efforts (as a meat eater, even I was into the fake duck). Cocktails are a little on the sweet side (the lycee martini is good however), Slightly weird decor though (kind of feels like you're in a sauna with the tiled seats...)
