Fact: The Linux kernel is by far the most active open source project on Earth. Its accepts an average of 185 patches each day. :O Oh this is how Linus accepts those patches working from home, alone, with his cat. Ha! #linux

Stoked!!! Nautilus is getting better. The configurations of it need work, but overall it's a good contender as a file manager. My next favorite would be PCManFM and Rox, of course.

The upcoming Nautilus 3.22 update includes batch file renaming and integrated file compression features.
There are plenty of new and improved features to enjoy in Nautilus 3.22, which is on course to ship as part of GNOME 3.22 late next month.

Elephants, Mourning

Like us, elephants appear to mourn their dead.

But what does that mean, exactly? It certainly looks like they’re experiencing grief, but some scientists argue that we can’t affix the label to their behavior without knowing for sure what’s going on inside their heads.

How much do they grasp the concept of death?

Same issue — clearly, based on the rituals they perform for the deceased, they know something, but it’s hard to say for sure how deep that knowledge goes.

And a video adds a new dimension to a mysterious and complex phenomenon. The footage shows several elephants standing over the remains of an old female named Victoria.

She had died of natural cause several weeks before, surrounded by family; the elephants in the video, though, weren’t related to her.

“What the family was doing was interesting, but what her non-relatives were doing is also important,” Goldenberg said.

“You see their investigation of the body. You see calves walking past and smelling it. It is amazing to see that level of fascination. Her family was distressed that she wasn’t getting up. But the larger population also was interested in her death.”

Biologist George Wittemeyer, who studies elephants, told National Geographic that the animals “have respect for their dead, but their interaction with their dead is not something we fully understand … The fact that they interact and have behavioral interactions with their dead in a form that is not explainable in any simple, evolutionary context speaks to the deeper emotional lives of elephants that we can’t easily study.”

Like us, it seems, elephants’ attitudes towards death are complicated, emotional, and sometimes unknowable.

...

The video not only captures an important ritual of elephant behavior, but reveals new insights about the strength of social bonds.

...

Elephants have long been regarded for their ability, along with dolphins and chimpanzees, among others, to express emotion, even empathy. But their response to death remains a mystery.

Do they have the human characteristic of grief?

The examples are mounting, though the science remains incomplete.

Other animals do not show great interest in the bodies of their dead.

African elephants do.

They have scattered their family members’ bones. They have been known to raise a foot over an elephant body.

The relatives of Eleanor, another matriarch at the Samburu Reserve, pulled and pushed her carcass for nearly a week after she died in 2003. Some rocked back and forth, while others stood silently.

Elephants also distinguish between elephant remains and other large mammals. In tests to measure their interest, they chose the skull of an elephant over the skulls of a buffalo and rhinoceros.

George Wittemyer says elephants have “a fascination with death” that is difficult to interpret.

...

“I have no doubt that elephants grieve,” she says. “We know these are smart and emotional creatures. We don’t need to know what they are thinking. With grief, we have to know that the survivor’s behavior is significantly altered from normal baseline, such as altered social withdrawal, feeding, sleeping, body posture that is sustained in some way.”

What's your opinion on GTK3, guys?

I think it's cool. I just wish there was a way to automatically make it backwards-compatible with GTK2 and switch at any time. As I'm sure you've noticed, lots of distros try to ship with all GTK3 while others try to still hold on to all GTK2.

If you're like me and you use lots of fancy themes, making GTK 2 and 3 live in harmony can be a royal pain. :P

I like gtk-screenrecorder and xvidcap for screen recording on Lin. Of course, vlc is always an option too, haha.
