We wanted to let you know about an exciting opportunity that one of our Firefighters will be participating in next month. Battalion Chief Tony Wittmann has been selected to participate in the FY2017 Assistance to Firefighters Grant peer review process in Emmitsburg, Maryland during the week of April 9th-13th. The Assistance to Firefighters Grant program is coordinated through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and FEMA and is the foremost grant program for Fire Departments in the country. Homeland Security will pay for Battalion Chief Wittmann’s travel to Maryland and he will spend the week at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, MD peer reviewing grant request proposals from departments throughout the country. Not only will BC Wittmann’s participation help facilitate the grant program but he will gain valuable grant writing experience during the peer review process. BC Wittmann took over as our department grant coordinator this year and submitted a grant request proposal for our department in February to the FY2017 AFG program in the amount of $192,889.00 for multiple items including a compressed-air fill station for Station 2, a turn-out gear cleaning extractor for Station 2, a turn-out gear dryer for Station 2, a back-up generator for Station 2, water rescue PPE, ballistic protection for firefighters and portable radios. If approved, we will be responsible for a 10% match for this grant. Chief Dru Tischer stated, “I’m really proud of Tony for taking advantage of this opportunity and I really appreciate his work on grants for our department. I am also grateful to State Fire Marshal Robert Doke for nominating Tony for participation in the peer review process.”

Shawnee Motorcycle Patrol
The citizens will start seeing something new from the Shawnee Police Department. The Shawnee Police Department has motorcycles on the streets working traffic. These motorcycles will be focused on traffic offenses in the City of Shawnee. The citizens will see these motorcycles in high traffic areas where offenses such as speeding and running red lights have become an issue. These motorcycles will also be deployed in the school zones to enforce speed limits. The motorcycles are equipped with lights and siren and do have police markings. The officers are uniformed officers. The police department is using all electric motorcycles. The motorcycles do not emit exhaust and there is no fuel usage or costs associated with their operation. We have been very impressed with these electric motorcycles and their ability to perform and out-perform many of their gas operated counter-parts. The officers operating the motorcycles have been equipped with safety gear and received law enforcement motorcycle training.
Any motorcycle is difficult to see or hear from a moving vehicle. Our motorcycles are completely silent. We urge drivers to remain aware of all motorcycles that share the road. The weather is getting warmer and we will see more motorcycles on the streets. We want all riders to be safe in Shawnee.
