Where would old literature professors be without energetic postgraduates? A recent human acquisition, working on the literary sociology of pulp science fiction, has introduced me to the intellectual equivalent of catnip: Google Ngrams. Anyone reading this blog must be tech-savvy by definition; you probably contrive Ngrams over your muesli. But for a woefully challenged person like myself they are the easiest way to waste an entire morning since G...

Google had a bold, futuristic vision for a gleaming new campus adjacent to its current headquarters in Mountain View, California. Mountain View, California had other ideas. This week, the city council rejected the bulk of Google’s plans by a 4-3 vote. Instead, it set aside the majority of the developable...

The main thing that holds G+ back is the unwillingness of some people to follow (or be followed by) people they don't already know. "But my friends aren't here!" is the core problem. I blame Facebook for making people think they can only follow and be followed by people they already know. There's PLENTY of meaningful interaction here but Facebook has defined what people think that interaction must be.

Introduction
Born in Fort Rucker, AL. Lived on the Mississippi Gulf Coast most of my life - my parents still live there so I visit often. I live in Brandon, MS, with my husband, my son, three cats, and three dogs. (See, three IS a magic number!)

Graduated from Gulfport High School in 1987. Graduated from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in 1989. Bachelor's degree in English from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg (1991). Master's degree in English from USM too (1993).

I work in communications/public relations in the health care field. I have also worked as a waitress, housekeeper, telemarketer (ask me about my experience trying to get folks to buy tickets for blind kids to go to the circus), freshman comp and technical writing teacher (as a TA), nanny, typesetter, graphic designer, copywriter, writer, magazine editor, magazine layout designer and creative director for an advertising agency. And I use all of those skills in my current position!

100 Things About Me

1. My first name is Shawn.
2. My middle name is Marie.
3. My maiden name was Zehnder.
4. I enjoy thunderstorms (and, I’ll admit, hurricanes).
5. I am 44 years old.
6. I know how a bill becomes a law (quite intimately).
7. I am short. (5' 3")

10. I’ve lived in Mississippi all of my life – but hopped around the state quite a bit.
11. I am a mom.
12. I am a sister.
13. I read the comics every day.
14. I made fun of fantasy players for years - until my husband made me play one year - and now I'm a fantasy football player too! (League Champ 2011, thankyouverymuch.) ;)
15. I’ve used a seat belt ever since I saw what my little brother’s face looked like after going through his car’s windshield.
16. I have a little brother. (HE LIVED!)
17. I ran a half-marathon the day after I turned 37. I had never run at all before training for that. (I decided I really, really like 5Ks!)
18. I love books – even when I don’t have time to read them.
19. I enjoy photography (taking pictures and looking at others' pictures).
