Recently I had a meeting with Gary Illyes from Google. Among other things we spent some time discussing how Google ranks websites in SERPS by scoring, the idea of "topical authority" (vs. "domain authority") and how Google treats canonicals in light of these.

After some time processing the content of our discussion, along with some experimentation (and imagination) -- here is a speculative article in my blog to share some ideas and some of the results.

An interview with a Googler combined with some imagination -- Wanna try crazy things with canonicals and manipulate rankings? Do this stuff at home!

Holistic SEO: it's much more than just links -- a humorous tease at SEOs who only care about links  - http://go.shr.lc/1B5t123
Some people focus obsessively about backlinks for SEO. Those people won't like this article. Don't read it if you are one of those people.

I find bringing the novelty back into the hobby motivates me, it's like a constant journey of trying to make the hobby "new" again over and over. By meeting new people with a common interest and discussing it with them, or blogging about it, basically sharing just like you are doing now is what I do to motivate myself, making it public
Motivation is a fickle thing. I'm not short on reasons why everyone should learn shorthand as standard in school. Nor am I short on justifications of why I should spend my hard earned holiday learning this unique and 'out of ...

Another fun blog article on my personal blog about digital marketing.
The world spends a lot of money on digital -- and managers, CFOs and CEOs are always trying to find what works and what doesn't to control costs (as they should)

But most online conversion journeys are interesting and nuanced. Here's a fun story about the challenge of attribution.
Giving credit to different digital marketing channels that we invest in is often more nuanced and interesting than you'd expect.

Here are some ideas about how to "establish credibility" through raising the qualification and quality of the things we say and the statements we make. http://shawnpowrie.com/leadership/8-ways-establish-credibility/

A while ago I spent some time thinking about supply and demand. The more I thought about it, the more I realised they are one and the same thing on a macro scale. We both create, and relieve, "pressure" on our world -- constantly. Interestingly, the train of thought lead to understanding how we should treat others -- as contributors in a symbiotic world. http://shawnpowrie.com/business/pressure-lifeblood-society/
When you zoom out -- supply is demand, and demand is supply. All of us are contributors in a big, symbiotic and synergistic world.

Sometimes a certain team will win against another team in a sport, not because it is intrinsically better, but because when you combine those two play styles the one just happens to beat the other. http://shawnpowrie.com/personal/rock-paper-scissors-effect/
Sometimes one thing will win over something else, but not because it is intrinsically superior -- just like rock, paper, scissors.

Jared did our wedding photos and it was an exceptional job. He is very experienced and talented in capturing the most natural and enjoyable shots. I appreciated his skill and he made us feel very comfortable and confident in his abilities. Great value for money -- I'd recommend Instill Photography without hesitation

I have been using Carlingford Mechanical for several years and for several different cars. I've found them to be immensely helpful, reliable, honest, and hard working. They always get the car to me in the timeframe that they promise to do so, they always give me a chance to chat and learn something new about cars and how I can better take care of my car, they give me advice on how to maintain it well, and let me know of any potential problems that may be coming in the future. Solid, reliable and honest mechanics, highly recommended to anyone in this area.

This KFC is easily distinguished from the others by its much higher quality service and friendliness and awareness of their staff, highly recommend this branch over the others

Which KFC you go to does matter. The staff here forget orders and are constantly saying "we're out of XYZ" or "it'll be 2 minutes" (which turns into 10) -- if you're wanting KFC rather go to the one on the corner of Marsden and Victoria road -- their service is much faster and accurate.
