Recently I had a meeting with Gary Illyes from Google. Among other things we spent some time discussing how Google ranks websites in SERPS by scoring, the idea of "topical authority" (vs. "domain authority") and how Google treats canonicals in light of these.

After some time processing the content of our discussion, along with some experimentation (and imagination) -- here is a speculative article in my blog to share some ideas and some of the results.

Sometimes a certain team will win against another team in a sport, not because it is intrinsically better, but because when you combine those two play styles the one just happens to beat the other. http://shawnpowrie.com/personal/rock-paper-scissors-effect/

I find bringing the novelty back into the hobby motivates me, it's like a constant journey of trying to make the hobby "new" again over and over. By meeting new people with a common interest and discussing it with them, or blogging about it, basically sharing just like you are doing now is what I do to motivate myself, making it public
