Lisa Helps and Team Launch VotePledge2014.ca – A Voter Turnout Campaign
On Wednesday March 12 at 11am at the Victoria Public Market, Lisa Helps and her campaign team will launch www.votepledge2014.ca
. This is the first in a series of events aimed at getting people inspired to get involved in the November 15 2014 municipal election.
Vote Pledge 2014 organizer Shawn DeWolfe says, “The work done by municipal Councils has a massive influence on our daily lives. And citizens who get involved at the municipal level and vote, can have a large impact on their community."
This is an extremely important time in the City of Victoria. Elected officials are making decisions on crucial issues including downtown development, sewage treatment, infrastructure replacement, and other issues that affect residents’ quality of life and businesses ability to thrive. Decisions made in the next term of Council will have an impact on Victoria for many decades to come.
But in 2011, barely one in four voters in the City of Victoria cast a ballot on Election Day. This was only 27% of the eligible total. This means less than a third of those eligible decided who would be in charge of the City’s affairs, and who would be responsible for a staff of 1,000 and managing a budget of about $200 million a year.
City Councilor and mayoral candidate Lisa Helps says that voting is an important first step in making politics your own. According to Helps, “Politics done well should inspire people to care about their city and to feel like they are part of the glue that holds the community together. Voting is step one.”
Here’s how Vote Pledge 2014 works: If you live in the City of Victoria and want to make a difference on Election Day, head to www.votepledge2014.ca
and take the pledge to vote on November 15. When you take the pledge, you will get reminders on where, when, and how to vote. You’ll also get information on all-candidates debates and other election-related activities including what I’m up to on the campaign trail.
Press Conference and photo opportunity at 11am Wednesday March 12, at the Victoria Public Market in the Hudson Building, 1701 Douglas St
