"Adding philosophy to the curriculum serves to counteract this instrumentalization of education, allowing students to discover the joy that is to be found in learning for its own sake.

An education in philosophy involves teaching students to think critically about the arguments and concepts put in front of them. In the philosophy classroom, the only authority is the authority of a well-reasoned argument. Teaching philosophically involves giving students permission to question, to challenge ideas and think for themselves. Such education has enormous potential to liberate students from a restrictive framework of dogmatic assumptions about the nature of the universe and the shape of a good life."
According to Epicurus, young people and old alike can benefit from the study of philosophy, which is a source of happiness: “Let no one hesitate to study philosophy while young, and let no one tire of it when old, for it is never too so...

For inventors, patents are an essential protection against theft. But when patent trolls abuse the system by stockpiling patents and threatening lawsuits, businesses are forced to shell out tons of money.

"Now that he is leaving The Daily Show, is there any circumstance in which he would watch Fox News again? He takes a few seconds to ponder the question. “Umm… All right, let’s say that it’s a nuclear winter, and I have been wandering, and there appears to be a flickering light through what appears to be a radioactive cloud and I think that light might be a food source that could help my family. I might glance at it for a moment until I realise, that’s Fox News, and then I shut it off. That’s the circumstance.”

There's a new medical device that allows people to take their blood (almost) painlessly.

Conjures images of Dr. Frankenstein for me. Interesting article and concept. All kinds of scenarios are ruminating in my mind. I wonder if this guy gets to chose his new body.

This place is located a few miles from the entrance to Lake Mead and is very inexpensive. For an uncovered, dirt space I think we payed $40/mo. We came to understand that you get what you pay for. Security at the place is less than desirable. We had a tire and wheel on our trailer swapped out with someone else's. They didn't even bother to tighten down the lug nuts. By the time we noticed it the damage was done. When we called the owner he said that 80% of the theft there was done by tenants. They of course wouldn't pay for the damage and offered no help in finding the people who did it.

It is as if someone lifted this restaurant right out of Rome and sat it down in Cabo San Lucas. By far some of the best Italian food my wife and I have tasted outside of Italy. I understand you are in Mexico but this is a must eat while visiting.

Very cool, cute coffee house / cafe. High ceilings, wood plank walls. Cozy, warm and inviting. Very good cappuccinos & lattes. They have a handful of signature drinks - Can't wait to try the Earl Grey latte!
