Having not logged on to Ancestry for a couple of weeks, I thought I'd check out the new databases. Was excited to see New South Wales, Australia, Convict Applications for the Publication of Banns. However, when I tried to access a record it told me I needed to upgrade to a world membership. For an Australian Record.

Surely they are kidding right? Anyone else have this problem?

I have submitted a "please explain" query to Ancestry, eagerly awaiting a response

+Sharon Muffett - nope, benefit now gone. Told me the same thing, clear cache, check status of membership, and they said the email I supplied didn't match the one on file!! They didn't ask for that email, they asked forum username!! I'd phone but I have a presentation to write.

I would just like to thank every single person I know for NOT telling me I should be knitting jumpers for oily penguins.

It's really saved me the effort of having to go to all your houses and smack you.

Fascinating story. One of the reasons I love genealogy is all the puzzles and research required to solve them :)

My Ancestry tree is private because it is a mess. I add everything to it verified or unverified. Related/unrelated and completely random. Why? To take advantage of Ancestry's automated search capabilities ie those shaky leaves.

My fully researched, reasoned and sourced tree is kept on my computer, and I will happily share what I have with people who contact me.

Why don't people post public family trees? Any online family historian has grappled with this question and landed on one side of the fence or another with their tree. Author Kerry Scott from Clue Wagon shares her take on private trees: http://ancstry.me/1o2baCW

+Sharon Muffett - I'm the same, public tree for both verified and unverified with the solid, evidence based tree on my computer. The public tree is also great for finding other researchers ie cousin bait!

Context is everything, I'm always telling people to read local and general histories and to read widely. Your post highlights this better than I could
When researching family history, genealogists put great emphasis on “proof”, and substantiating our conclusions. This establishes a sound basis for objective aspects such as lineage, occupations, residence, etc., but what abo...

Trove Tuesday: Highway Robberies on the Great Northern Road
Well it appears I may have found the antecedent to that bushranger anecdote passed along by my father: "HIGHWAY ROBBERIES ON THE GREAT NORTHERN ROAD." The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser  (NSW : 1843 - 1893) 22 Dec 1863: 3. Web. 26 Feb 20...

Oh, bother. My comment on you blog post disappeared into the ether. Thanks for jogging my memory - there is a bushranger story in my family - perhaps Trove will help me out too.
