Here's everything you need to know about Software-as-a-Service (aka SaaS).
In our continuing series on human resources and technology, I thought it would be good to cover a term that gets thrown around a lot – SaaS. It’s an acronym for Software-as-a-Service. Many times, when I hear the term SaaS, it’s used in the same sentence as “the cloud.” So much so that it’s easy …

Benchmarking is an important activity. Even more important is discovering who your organization wants to be benchmarked against.
It seems like a simple enough question. “What companies should we benchmark ourselves against?” The question was asked in a Facebook group I belong to. Unfortunately, I don’t think there’s an easy answer. Benchmarking is the process of comparing something (i.e. process, performance) against what someone else does. The process of choosing that “someone else” …

This applies to people and companies. What do you want to be known for?
I found this website recently. It’s a memorial to all of the products and projects that Google has abandoned over the years. While the site is in French, you immediately understand the point without even looking for the translate button. I think this Google Memorial site has become popular given the recent speculation about the …

Facilitation skills are unique. Not every presenter, keynote speaker, or trainer has the qualifications to be an effective facilitator.
I was reading an article about internships when I ran across the phrase “facilitating while learning”. It made me think, can you facilitate a topic that you aren’t knowledgeable on? One of a facilitator’s primary responsibilities is questioning. I can see where it would be very helpful to have some working knowledge of a topic …

Where has the year gone?! I feel like only yesterday I was putting away the holiday decorations and now it’s Spring!  Before I know it, I’ll be looking for 2016 Planners. The good news is with Spring comes some great HR events. I’m so looking forward to some travel! Next week, I will be attending …

Nice overview of the agile method.
As the agile method becomes increasingly popular, more project managers adopt it. One of the way for them to get better is by working in an agile shop.

How can we keep up with the speed of technology?
There’s lots of talk about skills gaps in the workforce. Today I want to talk about one specific skills gap – digital. I ran across this very good article on the Undercover Recruiter blog discussing some of the strategies we need to employ to bridge the digital skills gap. It’s worth a read. Technology is …

Fair and equal are not the same.
One of the biggest challenges I see managers deal with is employee relations, which has to do with the relationship between the employee and the company. Employee relations topics include conduct, performance, discipline, recognition, engagement, etc. When employee relations issues are handled poorly, managers can get labeled as “playing favorites.” Whether it’s recognition or discipline, …

Introduction

Hi everyone!  I'm Sharlyn Lauby, an HR pro turned consultant and blogger.

My company, ITM Group Inc., specializes in leadership and management training and human resources consulting.  And my blog, HR Bartender, is a friendly place to discuss workplace issues.

My off-hours are spent searching for the best hamburger on the planet, fabulous wines that cost less than $10 bottle and unusual iPhone / iPad apps.

I won a bubble gum blowing contest as a kid. And years ago, I was in a local performance group of the "Rocky Horror Picture Show". I played the role of Magenta.
