RULES FOR WHITE MEN:
1) Assume you are not woke.
2) No one assigns themselves their own status.
3) Don't prepare a list of ways in which you are not privileged. Women and POC have grandfathers who were bricklayers too. Being an ally requires accepting that you have privileges.
4) Disagreeing is not sexist or racist. Disagreeing with no effort to comprehend is arrogant, while agreeing with no effort to comprehend is patronizing. Being an ally requires taking responsibility, not following blindly. Use your brain at all times.
5) It is not the responsibility of women or POC to teach you anything. If you are heterosexual and your SO wants to tell you something about feminism, she will just tell you.
6) If you say something unintentionally asinine to a POC, it is almost certainly not the most asinine thing a white man has ever said to them. Move on.
7) No one asked you to feel guilty. No one cares how you feel. Your guilt doesn't do anything for anyone anyway.
8) You probably talk too much.
9) You can hold the door for anyone you want, give up your seat for anyone you want, and call anyone "sir" or "ma'am" that you want. Stop telling that story about the one time someone didn't like it.
10) Being an ally does not require that you stop drinking beer, listening to metal, listening to country, eating meat, watching sports, being horny, or driving a truck. Being an ally does not require that you eat tofu, drink lattes, drive a Prius, listen to the Indigo Girls, watch PBS, shave more often, shave less often, or speak very quietly at all times. So now you don't have those excuses anymore.
