Here's the thing...

If you are an asshole and wear/ fly the confederate flag* you are still an asshole.

If you are an asshole and wear/ fly the Canadian flag you are still an asshole.

If you are an asshole and wear/ fly the LGBLT rainbow you are still an asshole.

To paraphrase MLK Jr.: "I have a dream that I will one day live in a nation where we will not be judged by the color and style of their clothes or the flag that we fly but by the content of our character"

I choose to wear a Celtic Cross because I think it looks pretty. I don't give a shit that white supremacy has chosen to use the cross as a symbol. I am not wearing it to show my loyal devotion to the Zodiac killer. Judge me on what I say and do not by what hangs around my neck.

*also the flag in question was the navel jack was it not? If I'm not mistaken (and wikipedia confirms) the flag of the confederate states of america had the navel jack as a canton on white field with a red pale.

A long time ago when I was young (and thin) I sat down in the lunch room at work. I was sitting in the new guys section where the new laborers sit before they are assigned to a klique. Next to me was an ancient guy in biker garb. He looked like he stepped out of a movie script for the part of 'Hells Angel #3'.

We ate in silence for a couple of days. He would eat and then read from a thin cloth covered book. I would eat and then do the crossword in the local broadsheet. One day he chuckled as he turned a page and I looked up and smiled.

Good book? I asked

No. He answered. But I have to read it for my advanced physics class.

He only worked there until the end of summer when he returned to full time studies at the University but after that we talked at lunch about math and physics and theories I had never heard of and still don't have a hope of understanding.

I still look back and feel shame that I thought he was some stupid, doped up, hill billy because of the greasy jeans and white wife beater. This is why I struggle with the confederate flag. Without actually talking to the person how can I assume why they wear the flag?

Are we taking power away from a symbol by removing it?

I have been tagged to post something silly on my feed to support breast cancer.

I can't do it.

It's not that I don't think it is a worthy cause. My family is intimately affected by cancer. I understand all too well how important it is to support research not only for an eventual cure but also for detection and treatment.

"If ovarian cancer is found (and treated) before the cancer has spread outside the ovary (stages IA and IB), the 5-year relative survival rate is 92%. However, only 15% of all ovarian cancers are found at this early stage." from cancer.org

When my wife was diagnosed she was at stage 4 and had a best case scenario of 20% 5-year survival.

So I'm not going to post something silly to raise awareness.

I'm going to do something. And I challenge you to do something as well.

I challenge you to donate an hour. If you can afford it write a check for what you earn in an hour and give it to someone in need. If you want to support breast cancer there are many charities. Ovarian cancer as well. You can also support local cancer treatment centers.

Give the check to school or a church or a community service group.

Drop off the check at a homeless shelter. Or a food bank. Or hand it to homeless person on the street.

It doesn't matter where you do it. Find a cause that you care about and support it.

If you can't afford to donate an hour's wages then donate the hour. Volunteer. Organizations the world over need people to make a difference.

So. I'm going to give an hour to make a difference. I hope you will too.

In the era of 1000s of channels it isn't about what we watch - it's about what we treasure.

"Like, I’ll happily watch 44 minutes of Deadliest Catch and I might even tweet about it, but it won’t be nearly as important to me as spending 3 minutes with Vi Hart as she explains to me how we know that the infinite set of real numbers is larger than the infinite set of natural numbers. Deadliest Catch is something I watch. Original content on YouTube — whether it’s let’s play or beauty tutorials or introductions to Nigerian history — is something I treasure."

Lately a lot of things are inspiring and conspiring to get me to put ink to page and map again.

This is one of those inspiring things.
Fantastic Maps originally shared to How to Make Maps:

How I Draw My Maps

This is the full tutorial that breaks down each step in how I draw my maps. Each step has the short summary, along with links to the more detailed walkthrough for each step.

This is for a town map, but I follow a similar process for every map. Enjoy!
This tutorial covers my entire process for how to draw a map - from start to finish. Here I'm illustrating a town map, but the steps apply to any map.

Where did that whitespace come from? THis is one where I don't agree with everything recommended. I try to avoid css resets like the plague.
